blah, blah, blah....cold legs..

There have been very few times that my legs have not warmed up on a run. This morning was one of those mornings where they wouldn't get warm. They were still cold after I got out of a hot shower. Odd? Guess I should've worn some Capri tights. I had on a long sleeve tech shirt, shorts, no gloves. My hands warmed up after the first couple of miles.  My phone said 43 degrees & newschannel 5 said 41 but it felt colder than that to me. Anyway, I did 5.1 miles this morning before work at a 9:56 pace.
I walked a lot with some sprints the last half of it. I'm going to try to do a work out like this once a week and loosely call it "speed work". I can't seem to get over to the track in Nolensville. We found out about it a few months ago from the NRC.

Yesterday, I did yoga & this afternoon, I ab ripped & did XStretch. I try to keep ab ripper on my schedule every other day. (That is why I seem like I repeat myself when list my workout here.)

Tomorrow I'm doing Jillian's Shred dvd & yoga. I love it when she says, "NO EXCUSES!"  ;-)

Still no sign of our neighborhood gym opening soon. I'm betting it's more like April than March now. Who knows….I'm tempted to call them if it's not open by the end of March.  I can't wait to throw some gym work outs into my week!

Looks like we will be signing up for the Volkslaufe 20k, July 4th in Frankenmuth, MI. Joe & I will be due 12 miles around that time anyway since Chicago training will kick off mid June for us. We'll leave for Canada on the 5th for basically 1 ½ days. (the rest of the family will stay a little longer).  I have got to renew my passport that expired in '98.  Technically, since it expired more than 10 yrs ago I can say it's "lost" & keep it.

Google Chrome……grrr…
Anybody else not happy about the google chrome?

the ankle wrap

It really isn't as bulky as it looks. Runs real well, actually. I'll find out just how much more I'll have to run in it next Wednesday when I go back to Dr. Holmes.

Also, I assumed the Tom King event was on the 17th.  Turns out it's the 10th. Hooray, I don't have to miss my 10 mile training run afterall.  It will be easy to add a few miles to the 5k that I'm doing.  (but we'll be dragging the kids with us.  I'm hoping that Jessica runs the 5k!)

This Saturday's HILLY 8 miler...

The route of this Saturday's run is 8 miles instead of 9 in Percy Warner.
Check out those hills.
http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=470554

I've run in Percy Warner several times but not sure I've run this area of it...been a LONG time.
All the leg muscles should get a work out on this route.

My workout today will be Jillian Michael's yoga workout #1 & more IT Band stretching.
I did nothing but ice my right ankle & drink coffee this morning while catching up on who got what at the Oscars last night.
Tomorrow, I will get out the door in the morning for 5 miles before work & I will eat a Stinger Waffle rather than run hungry.  ;-P

the weekend in a blink....

Saturday's run with the FF group: 8.09 miles (overall pace 9:44)
I was up at 4:45am & out the door by 6:00am. I need that time to wake up, drink coffee, get dressed, check the weather, get dressed again, etc... :-P
I've always been a pro at tying long sleeve tech shirts & running jackets around my waist & this past Saturday's run was no exception. We usually stand around for 10-15 minutes before we take off.  If we could take off a little quicker, I might be tempted to leave some clothing in the car.  It was 28 degrees at 7:00am. We warmed up quickly when we started those "Music Row" Country Music Marathon/Half Marathon hills in the Belmont area. The sun was out & I felt good for the most part. I brought the stinger wafer with me to eat around mile 4 or 5.  At the first water stop, I didn't bother stopping. We were only around 3.3 or so into the run so I was ok. What I should have done is eat my wafer when I waited at the Musica Statue area.  With me avoiding the water stop, that put me way ahead of the group.  Once at the Musica Statue, I couldn't remember if we were going to go left & turn immediately or go left then turn on another street.  I stopped, stretched, & got my heart rate down. I probably stood there a minute or longer. I refuse to stop my garmin when we stop for traffic or stop for fluids. It feels like I'm cheating when I do that. ha!  I cannot wait to run a steady pace uninterrupted & that will most likely be this next weekend when we head back to Percy Warner park for 9 miles.  YIKES!  This park is home to the "Flying Monkey Marathon".  I doubt I ever do that marathon because of it's difficulty but I never say never.... If I ever did it, I would have to have someone to whine chat with the entire way that's for dang sure.

Mile 1: 9:42
Mile 2: 9:16
Mile 3: 9:19
Mile 4: 9:30
Mile 5: 10:43 (at Musica Stature where I waited on the group)
Mile 6: 10:50 (2nd water stop where I actually drank water & ate my wafer)
Mile 7: 8:59
Mile 8: 9:29
.09:      9:10

I got some stuff done in the 'homa, Joe drove down with the kids, & we hung out with my cousin Pam's family.  We even made it to trivia for the first time with them & had a blast.  Before dinner/trivia, we did get in a 3.3 mi walk from their house through town & behind the high school. (17:46 pace but still, it was good to be out getting some exercise with the family on a beautiful day)

Today: 3.25 mi recovery run 10:35 pace..
I shortened my usual 4 mile Sunday recovery run some because I was short on time & counted the 3.3 mi walk from Saturday on my exercise log.  ;-P  I did ab ripper, worked with my free weights, & stretched the IT Band.

We went to the "Our Kids Soup" benefit that benefits abused children at LP Field.  My work bought a block of tickets & I snagged 4 of them.  We took the kids.  I think it was something cool to expose them to & the soups were delish!  Joe grabbed a list of the restaurants with the lists of soups they served.  They had everything from vegan soups to dessert soups.  I was amazed at what types of soups they had, really!  Have you ever heard of pumpkin bumpkin soup, woodchuck cider & cheddar soup, or warm apple pie soup?  Needless to say, we were full when we left there. I downed water with my soups even though I wanted to sip Joe's diet coke. (Still no diet coke for me for Lent. I've noticed others caved on theirs already.)
They also had a silent auction.  Fleet Feet donated a training program & some running gear. I bid 2X & still lost. ;-(

It's academy awards night. My evening gown is a wife beater t-shirt & fleece pj pants. I did do my toenails, though.  ;-P

Stretching with "Ellen"

After waking up hungry around 3:30-4:00am, I decided to let "Jillian" sleep in...  I watched a dvr'd "Ellen" from yesterday while doing IT Band exercises.  Let me tell you, I know how to make the hip scream when I put my mind to it.  This gal has some great exercises that my PT didn't show me. (Note to self: find resistance band)

This afternoon, I'm not sure if I'll do yogo or not.  I may just call it a day since we get the kids & I am seeing my chiro/massage therapist in the neighborhood after work.  I know one thing, I've got to make sure I am not waking up hungry again.  When I start doing 6+ milers again in the mornings, I'm going to make myself eat one of these before I head out. I refuse to run in the mornings this summer with the same ole, sleepy, hungry, slow pace.

I love "Ellen".  Whenever we do decide to go to L.A., I want to make sure I get seats to a taping of her show. She is probably one of the most "positive" entertainers on tv. She does so much for people & I love how she closes the show with "Be kind to one another".  ;-)

My new pumped up kicks...

Move over Chacos, there's a new flip flop in my closet.  These Montrails feel like butta!
I took a size 7 in these. Normally, I wear an 8 in shoes like these.
I went to Fleet Feet to get in on their running bra sale.  Got fitted yet again. Turns out my rib cage area is small but the boobs & shoulders throw me in a medium. (sorry guys!)  I'm so hard to fit with EVERYTHING!  Everything I tried on was either too big in the rib cage to fit my "upper portion" or too small in the boobs to fit my rib cage area.

To each his own....

Every year, I see/hear about a lot of folks giving up bad habits for Lent.  The most popular I think is "chocolate".  In the past, I've never made any promises to give up anything for Lent but I did comment on another blog that I was giving up diet cokes this year (& that I only drink maybe 2 a month). As soon as I did that I started craving one.  ;-)

What people do/say on ANY form of social media about what they're giving up really doesn't affect me or my opinions of them.  To each is own...  If you choose to give up TV to spend more time exercising or more time with your kids, that's your choice.  Good for you! If I choose to give up something little like a few diet cokes then that's my choice.  When I'm in full marathon training mode, I crave one after every hot, hilly, LONG Tennessee run I do so I drank a lot last July, Aug, Sept, & Oct.  When I say a lot, I mean at least 4-6 a month. It's just a number but it's a number that I knew I wanted to bring down.  I'm down to maybe 2 a month and pretty proud of it.  My MI cousin, Patti, gave them up over a year ago as a new years resolution.  They're bad for you, for me they can trigger migraines but there's nothing better than large fountain diet coke right after you've run your buns off here in the heat, humidity of Tennessee.  (I would make Joe drive straight to a McDonald's drive thru for just ONE LARGE DIET COKE.) That's one thing I'm certainly going to watch for while training for Chicago this summer.

The only thing that will make me mad (AGAIN) is if I hit a 9:55 pace on a hilly, hot 21 miler in under 3 hrs 30 minutes & then I bonk in Chicago.  That just can't happen again!  ;-)

So, if you're giving up anything for Lent, good for you.  I hope you succeed & to each his own.....

Foggy, froggy, blah 4 miles.......

Yesterday, I did Jillian Michael's yoga & her shred. If you've never done her shred dvd, it's like P90X crammed into a 20 minute workout. It's three levels. I've done level 2 maybe 2X. I stick to level one in order NOT to make myself too sore to run.  It really is a great work out!

This morning I went out in the damp, foggy morning about 5:10am for my scheduled 4 miler.
I walked several times..just couldn't handle the hills this morning so I was surprised to see a 9:57 pace.
I LOVE our 'hood because I'm always surrounded by other runners/walkers/dog walkers but the hills...as I've said a trillion times, the hills just keep the IT Band screaming.  I have to go slow on the hills.
When I run 4, 5, 6 + miles, I always have 2 big hills in the 1st mile, unless I want to run that course in reverse. This afternoon, I'm ab ripping & stretching.  (Got laundry to get caught up, too)

On another note, Joe got rear ended on Concord Road about 6:15pm-ish yesterday.  His Saturn will need work, I would guess...I've not seen it. He's ok & the guy is ok.  While they stood there with the police, they witnessed another rear end accident. I'm not a fan of Concord Road in that particular area.  Too thin with almost no shoulder & curvy.  Joe said his neck hurt a little from the whip lash but we'll see how he is today.  He may end up at my chiropractor.  I cracked up when he told me that he told the guy that he better be glad he didn't hit me because I LOVE my honda.  ;-)  We're still talking about getting a newer, bigger vehicle by the end of the year...just watching gas prices & prices on what we want. I'm still very much in big time love with the Honda CR-V.

Tomorrow morning, I'm planning to get up for my Jillian Michael's yoga. I'm really looking forward to our 8 miler with the Fleet Feet group this Saturday.

Fat Tuesday...no so fat.

I was at work today not in New Orleans...no drinking for me!  :-P
Just a 5 mile run in the morning (10:01 pace in the winds!), & ab ripper, some yoga/IT Band stretching, etc...this afternoon.  Yeah, it was pretty this afternoon after work but I chose to run before work in the winds like a duffus. ;-P

Yesterday, after crossing a dozen things off my list (I was off work), I did do P90X Stretch. My body was craving a good stretch.

We are in the early stages of planning our 4th of July trip to MI. Looks like it's going to involve a trip to Canada to spread Joe's grandma's ashes. I've got to figure out how to see my Waterford/Auburn Hills/Rochester relatives too.  That's going to be a busy week. The week prior to it, I'll be downtown Nashville for a conference for work all week. End of June/early July will be busy!

So, March....we have the Tom King race mid-month & the kids soccer is starting up.  We have more birthdays coming up around that time too. We will have Joe's parent's here at some point during this time.
April, we will be in Orlando Apr 4th - 8th.  The weekend of Apr 20th-21st, Joe & I will be in Carmel, IN for our super flat 1/2 marathon with the Nolensville Run club.  Last weekend in April, we have the Country Music 1/2 marathon.
May seems to calm down...NO traveling & NO big work stuff.  Jessica will be graduating from the 8th grade.  ;-)   No plans for Memorial Day & that's fine with me.
In June there will be work stuff going on for me, then we'll head to MI during the 4th. The rest of the month, will involve the official kick off of our Chicago marathon training.  August & September will involve lots of running for us.
Oct 7th is the marathon so we'll obviously spend that weekend in Chicago, leaving on friday & coming home monday.  Then we'll be staring Halloween in the face.  Thanksgiving will be spent in San Antonio.  Our anniversary is the following weekend......where, who knows...may stay here, may not...  ;-P   We may head to Gatlinburg again for the Santa Hustle 1/2 marathon again, who knows...
Christmas will be in Michigan.
New Years will be here most likely.  I am wrapping my head around all this & there's so much more I want to plan.
As they say, Life happens when you're busy making plans....

snowy rain puddles...

We got snow but it's been so warm that it melted practically before it hit the ground. We ran 4 miles in it. (10:08 pace)  It was pretty. Joe even said that it reminded him of a Norman Rockwell snowy scene in our neighborhood.  The road didn't feel slippery just lots of puddles.  I now have a new set of what I will call my "rain shoes".  I donated last Fall's official "rain shoes" to Fleet Feet. As a matter of fact, we've donated at least 4 pairs in the last couple of weeks.  I spent a few hours today going through closets & I have a good pile of stuff that's going to Goodwill.  I like to do this about every 6-8 months. (Forces me to organize & find stuff that's buried.)  When I buy something, I try to only buy what I need & get rid of something I no longer need. I'll never be called a pack rat, thank goodness.

Once I got out of the wet clothes, I did ab ripper & stretched some. I'm looking forward to the chiropractor & massage therapist tomorrow.  I'm also going to a dermatologist & eye doctor.  It will be a productive day off!

As for "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close".  Definitely a good movie to see. It reinforced my belief in our actions to find the terrorists behind 9-11.  So many kids lost their parents that day.  The little boy in it did an awesome job.

As for my latest "read"...not reading anything right now.  Waiting for something to catch my eye, I guess...

Just heard on ET that Jillian Michael's says one of her greatest fears would be running a marathon.  I'm thinking, NO WAY, if anyone can, she can. I think she should do one for charity.

Been watching some Whitney Houston tribute stuff...  Below is probably one of my favorites from her.  Brings back some memories...

SUPER Productive Saturday

I'll admit that I fell into bed at 8:15pm fri night but I was raring to go this morning at 4:45am when the alarm was about to go off.  The FF group run met in Jim Warren park for our 7 miler.  I had a hard time finding it since I get turned around when I get to the square. ha! I was there with 20 minutes to spare for the bathroom which wasn't full when I went in...GREAT!  Standing around waiting to start & freezing to death is the worst & I was overdressed this morning.  Thankfully, I was in shorts & not tights. My phone said 38 degrees & the sun was coming up. No wind. I had on my nashville striders singlet underneath my NRC long sleeve, underarmour jacket, & gloves. Needless to say, by mile 4 I had my jacket & the NRC shirt tied around my waist. I felt like a clothes line. ha!  One guy asked me if my hands were warm yet & when I was taking off the gloves. ;-)
David commented about what all I took off too & I told him that if anymore came off it might be ugly.  I'm telling ya folks, I run as naked as I can in the summer.  My hair is probably the longest it's been since 7th grade so when I sweat now, the pony tail gets heavy & totally gross. Yes, I sweat when I run in 38 degree weather.  When I stop, I freeze to death.

Our route seemed pretty easy, stopping for redlights always allows us to get the heart rate down but there was one light that seemed to take forever to change.  My garmin read 7.15 miles at a 9:32 pace when I got to the car.  I had a text from Joe to meet him at Mama's Javas for breakfast. The NRC meets there every Saturday after they run.  So, I ran with one group then joined another for breakfast. ;-)  Fun group & we can't wait to run with them in Carmel, IN in April.  The NRC group that's going is so big now that they've invited us all into the VIP tent there that morning. Too funny!

After we got home & showered we headed to the Old Hickory Verizon store to finally pick up our new iPhone 4s phones.  (Out of Stock)  So, we called the Greenhills Verizon & they put two on reserve for us.  We then hit up Fleet Feet for some deals.  At one point, we found ourselves comparing the weights of shoes.  Joe picked up his Nike shoes & commented that the color would match his NRC shirt.  I cracked up. I told him he was a "girl" & that his man card should be turned in with a comment like that.  His Pegasus shoes come in some fun colors.  :-)

We headed to Greenhills to watch "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" then got our phones.  After a quick trip to Walmart, I'm here blogging & admiring my new iPhone with it's cool black & green plaid cover on it.  (We got covers for free.  Apparently, when you tell the sales people "No, I don't want to buy the accessories I can get them off amazon cheaper."  They'll find a way to give them to you for free or a small fee.)  Score!!

Tomorrow I'm ab rippin', stretching, & running 4 slow recovery miles.
Apparently, you can do ab ripper without buying the dvd.  See LINK.

my brain spewing out random stuff....

I wasn't going to post anything today because it was just me on the floor this morning doing Jillian Michael's yoga workout #1.  (but I'm bored not busy today.)

I'm just going to throw out some random stuff today...

What do yall think about that Country Music Mini-Marathon?
I see both sides of the coin.
First of all, it might get some folks (who don't run long) to do it in order to get the bib to go to the concert with their significant other that night.  Let's face, 13.1 & 26.2 mile races aren't for everyone.
It's all about the $$$, ya know....and this short run will definitely bring in more of it.

I don't like that they're calling it a "mini-marathon".  Call it something else?  Make it a 5k!
People are already confused about what constitutes a "marathon".
A FULL marathon is 26.2.  Putting the word "mini" in front of it to me will add to the confusion.
"How long is your marathon?"  (I wish I had a dollar for every time I've heard that.)
"I ran my marathon this morning."  (And it was really a 5k race...etc...)
I know a lot of folks who've worked hard to run the REAL marathon distance.
(I've slogged through 9 of them, myself.)  Let's not take away from that.

In the world of the NBA, there's something "special" going on & it's called "LinSanity".
One word...Amazing.....and I'm not even a big basketball fan.  ;-)

I got these cool medal display holders off Allied Medal Displays. Great way to organize finisher & award medals.  (Believe it or not, I do have quite a few age graded awards from some smaller races.) Joe's are thrown on here too.

Again, I'm excited about tomorrow's training run with the group. It's 7 miles & I'm all too happy to be getting into the "meat & potatoes" of this training program. I don't know why but 7 miles just sounds better than 5 or 6.  I'll run again in the "Big Ben" wrap. I've run in it every single time since I got it from Dr. Holmes. I've had a few runners ask me about it. When I tell the guys that's it's pretty much the same thing that Ben Roethlisberger wore the latter part of the season on his ankle, they know exactly what I'm talking about. The women...notsomuch.... ;-)  (I don't have a pic of it or I would post it...maybe in another post.)

I confirmed that Kim & Michael C. are doing the Tom King 1/2 on Mar 17th.  So I'm going to go ahead & run the 5k since I registered for it before I signed up for the FF training runs.  I'll just run a mile or so before it & then finish up the rest of the scheduled 10 miles after the 5k.  Can't wait to see them!

I'm ready to order more of these shoes!  (not this particular color, of course)

It's almost time to head home.  Happy Weekend Running everyone!

3.21 miles with some sprinkles....

I was in bed by about 8:45pm last night & wide awake by 4:30am-ish...so there was no excuse not to knock out the little 3 miler on our 1/2 mary schedule this morning.  It was 51 degrees & very light sprinkles.  I ended up with a 9:45 pace & 3.21 miles per my garmin.  The air was very still so I didn't get the added "entertainment" of the chimes blowing in the wind as I crested the first of several hills this morning.
I always think to myself, "Thank God, I don't live next to anyone with annoying chimes on their porch."  We live way too close together in this 'hood NOT to hear to stuff like that.
Not many runners out, except for the Nicki G's girls running in the dark in dark clothing as usual. They were carrying hand weights. One of these mornings, I just know I'm going to hear one of them yell "Ouch!" if/when they drop a weight on their feet while running in the dark. Incidentally, I overheard an older lady talking at the Valentine's Day party last friday night that our 'hood puts on every year.  Apparently, she hears the N.G. group talking at around 6am on the main road most mornings.  I cracked up!  Apparently, they wake her up.
She's not amused. ha!
I'm ab rippin' & yoga'in after work today.  TGITHURSDAY!

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday....

February seems to be flying by.....

Monday: I stretched & worked with my 5 lb weights after work...tired, busy day...(had some sort of strange "bug" that caused my belly to ache during the night...sleep deprived)
Tuesday: 5 miles 9:35 pace & ab ripper.....another busy, tired day...
Wednesday:  30 minutes of Jillian Michael's yoga #2 this morning & I plan to do her Shred dvd & some IT Band exercises after work today.
Thursday: 3 miles on the calendar & ab ripper...not sure what else...that may be it.
Friday: 30 minutes of Jillian Michael's yoga #1
Saturday: 7 miles with the Fleet Feet group in Franklin at the Jim Warren park...driven by there but never really been there I don't think?....seems like my ex husband's family had a family reunion there YEARS ago.

I can't wait for our neighborhood gym to open so I can do some different things. I feel like doing the dvds is starting to get "old" to me. I do miss the weight machines you find in the gym.

This weekend I plan to see "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close"....bringing tissues...
We will get our new iPhones & adopt our new "daughters" Siri & Siri...they will be twins (iPhones). ha!
I'm off Monday for President's Day.  We get this day off but not "Good Friday".  Odd?
Feb 26th we are attending the "Our Kids Soup" event at LP Field. (work gave me tickets)
Lots of stuff crammed into the end of February but it's winding down....

Sherry

I have to admit when I finally realized what the "Run for Sherry" was it was a bit too late.  I kept seeing mentions of her on other blogs but didn't know the full story until now. I had no idea how recently this happened. Wow, and in a small town in Montana....  My heart just aches when I read stuff like this...so VERY senseless. Makes me want to carry the pepper spray all the time no matter what time I run. Even in my 'hood where there's always runners out even when the temps are what they were this weekend. I feel really safe in my 'hood but you never know...  I actually know someone in the 'homa who runs with a handgun & a rottie.  She was attacked once (probably by a drunk) on the greenway behind the high school there & that's all it took for her to arm herself.  My former college roommate was flashed on that same greenway years ago so it's a hang out for the weirdos, apparently.

So, there's two things I can't emphasize enough......get 2nd opinions on injuries & make every effort to be safe when you run.  Try to NOT run alone, carry pepper spray, a whistle, brass knuckles, something.  (I smile when I think of the lady in my 'hood who walks with the golf club every day.)

My heart goes out to the family of Sherry Arnold. God bless her....

Busy Sunday.....

Today: 4 "recovery" miles (9:50 pace...it was cold & I didn't wear the heart rate monitor because I didn't want an 11:00 pace...so much for "recovery"...)
I did ab ripper & some stretching

We had Joey's b-day party/weekend so there was enough eating this weekend.
Between last week's Super Bowl party & Joey's b-day, we've had some crazy eating going on but I've not gained one pound according to our scale.

Not sure what I'll have time for tomorrow. I usually just do yoga or something similiar on Mondays.  I'm cutting back the chiro/massages to two a week now. I know they're helping but I feel that I don't need to be as aggressive with them now that I'm in week 4 of this rehab.  If there is any advice that I can throw out there it's to always keep getting the 2nd opinions if it appears nothing is working with your current rehab.  I like Promotion & I learned a lot of great IT Band exercises BUT I wish I had gone to the chiropractor first. An X-ray showing how twisted up my hips were was way more valuable than just exercising the crap out of my left IT Band. I can do these IT Band exercises until the cows come home but if my lower back/hip area is jacked up then they won't work.  Lord knows I've proven that.  I feel pretty good & I'm ready to increase the mileage & try to find some speed.

And as for Whitney Houston...my gosh, her music, her voice...I have no words to explain how beautiful I've always thought her voice was.....
I kicked myself for days after figuring out I missed out on getting tickets to her concert at Murphy Center way, way "back in the day."   My roomie, Joanie, & I lived in Bel Aire apts across from Murphy Center while we were at MTSU in the late 80's.  I was so jealous watching people heading to the concert & some were even parking over at our parking lot.  ha!  You would think that with so MANY examples of drug abuse in the entertainment industry that people would learn but it continues.  I just hate that Whitney, apparently, let it beat her body down so much she couldn't live past 48.  ;-(

6.1 miles with snowflakes

At first I thought I was way overdressed, notsomuch....
I had on the following: I needed it all!

2 prs of gloves (nyc marathon gloves under Hanson's run club gloves)
Hind tights (love them!)
Long CEP compression socks (love, love, love them....)
Short sleeve Ragnar Relay shirt (everyone needs to do that!)
Long sleeve NYC marathon finisher shirt (sore reminder of IT Band issues)
Long sleeve Nolensville Run Club shirt (great group!)
Blue Nike Fit running jacket (probably 3rd time I've ever worn it)
And my new NEUTRAL Mizuno Wave Rider 15's (felt like 5 lbs were lifted off my feet & legs in them this morning!)

We had a lot of stops for lights & I kept my garmin on for those stops so my overall pace for the 6.1 was only 10:01.  We had to be very careful looking for ice. The snow picked up which was fine but the sun came out.  I kept having to blink the snowflakes out of my eye lashes.  ;-)  The wind chill was 13 or 14 degrees & my phone was toggling back in forth between 26 & 27 degrees.

I'm going to stretch, work out with my hand weights, & enjoy the rest of the day.
I hope everyone gets out for a great run this weekend!

Bring on the COLD!

Yesterday's 3 miler was ok…still slow at a 9:44 pace.
Joe ran with me then took off for a few more miles.

This morning I thought seriously about sleeping in but for some reason dragged myself out of bed for some Jillian Michael's yoga. (workout #1….for the arms & back).
It always feels good to do her yoga in the mornings or any of her dvds, really.
Like I've said before….the yoga is just 30 minutes so NO EXCUSES.

Tomorrow is going to be the chilliest run we've had so far & probably the chilliest I've had in a VERY long time. (mid to upper 20s for our 6 miler in the morning)  Call me a nut but I'm actually excited about it!

I'm definitely wearing my Hind tights, long compression CEP socks, gloves, & two long sleeve tech shirts. I may throw a singlet up underneath the two shirts. I have two running jackets but I can count on one hand the times I've worn them. Ummm, maybe I should bring one….wouldn't hurt to throw one in the car.

Not sure what we'll have going on tomorrow but Jessica is going to the Paint + Canvas place to paint for an hour or two at 11:00am. We celebrate Joey's 12th birthday Sunday at "Dave & Busters" (Feb 14th is his birthday). I'm thinking that it might be a good weekend to spend a lot of time in pajamas watching a movie & drinking some sugar free hot chocolate with some Baileys in it.  ;-P

dumping some random thoughts on thursday....

This runner is running Boston for a GREAT cause. I'm following his journey there.

Looking forward to the really COLD 6 miler in the Cool Springs area this weekend. ;-)
I can't wait to run in my new shoes again.

I bought one of these today. ;-)

I did ab ripper & IT Band exercises this morning & I am doing the scheduled little 3 miler as soon as I get home.  I actually got home in time to do the 20 minute Jillian Michael's shred dvd before heading to the chiropractor yesterday.

It always feels a little weird the first weekend after the Super Bowl not to have any college or NFL games to watch.  (Time to catch up on movies!)

I'm thinking of sending Jessica here this Saturday for a couple of hours.  I think she'll enjoy it & it's in our 'hood!!!

Valentines Day is fast approaching & I'll comment on it now since I may forget or be too busy on the 14th.  I'm not the mushy, gushy type at all but I know I'm pretty lucky with my Valentine. He has his quirks & so do I but we let each other be & at our age that's what we both need the most. We encourage each other, enhance each other, entertain one another, & totally enjoy our life together.  I've only known Joe since Halloween of 2008 but I've seen him change & deal with changes a great deal since then. The best change he's made is putting his health first & foremost. He actually thinks about what he's putting in his mouth these days.  He doesn't just have career goals but running goals, also. (He's not ALL ABOUT ONE THING)  He now has a goal of one day qualifying for Boston.  I am so grateful he has some FAST friends to run with occasionally.
(He's definitely NOT exactly the same man I met in 2008 & that's a GOOD thing!)  Who says you can't change a person or teach an old dog new tricks!  ha!  ;-P

some light grumbling.....

The little 4 miler yesterday went ok...9:52 pace. I swear I'll never run fast in our 'hood with all the hills in it...ever....  *grumble, grumble*  Sometimes I just want to throw a white flag on the road & scream, "I surrender to the hills!"

I did the 30 minute Jillian Michael's yoga workout #2 this morning & plan to do her 20 minute Shred dvd this afternoon.  I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate a little more P90X into my weeks since we're still doing less than 20 miles a week on this 1/2 mary plan right now.  I can't cut back on sleep to do it, though.  Times like this I wish I lived closer to work but I'm not going to gripe too much about that. A lot of folks have almost an hour drive into work.  Takes me around 30 minutes in the morning if traffic is "normal".  You all know we don't know how to drive in the fog, rain, or snow here in Nashville. ha!

Speaking of weather....it's actually going to feel like winter this weekend in middle Tennessee...the temp is dropping.  We only have 6 miles to cover Saturday morning so I'll barely be out in it.  I think Sunday is going to be colder so my "recovery" run will be run in the middle of the day for sure.

Ouch!

After 4 sessions with the pressure point massage therapist, I'm finally feeling the burn, the soreness... He is on a mission to get my IT Band well or else!

I did P90X Core Synergistics yesterday just to remind myself how hard it is...gesh!  It's 57 minutes long & it's definitely not one of the easier CDs. I'd rather do plyometrics any day than this one.  It's been a LONG time since I've done this one. It's mainly upper body stuff.  I feel like I've improved my upper body somewhat but it can always use the work.

This morning I challenged myself again to try to remember all the P90X ab ripper moves. I think I've got them all in my head now. I did work out some with my 5 lb free weights afterwards.  I just couldn't bring myself to get the 4 miles in with it being 29 degrees at 5am. (We've been so spoiled!) So, this afternoon, the 4 miler will happen after work. I think we'll have a high of about 55. This winter is so strange. I pray it doesn't indicate a harsh summer.  It's not uncommon for the temp to be 76-78 degrees at 5am here in the summer & I can deal with that. If it's warmer than that in the morning, it's going to be a looonnngggg summer that is for sure!

We're eating leftover Super Bowl food all week. ;-)

Holy Crap!

It has SOLD OUT in 5 days?!!!

Rubbing some salt today...

I knew the Patriots seemed to be a little more banged up than the Giants.
I also knew they wanted to win the Super Bowl REAL bad & when you want something REAL bad, you tend to ignore pain. (not always a good thing, trust me on that one!)

Joe cracks me up commentating on the rules before the announcers do so when Bradshaw stopped then fell backwards into the end zone, all four of us started laughing. Joe had just told us what was going to happen & it "almost" happened. Per Eli's interviews they were all screaming at Bradshaw NOT to score. Getting into that end zone any way you can is what's "bread" into them so it just made it seem more dramatic. ha!

How am I tying this into running?
Have you ever run a race knowing full well you weren't going to PR?
Or your doctor advised against running it?
Have you ever signed up for a race telling yourself you were going to treat it as a training run?
Our instincts are to push ourselves (at least most of us probably feel this way).
My personal example:
That craptastically hilly "Nashville Women's 1/2 Marathon" last Fall....that one that signaled the beginning stages of the IT Band issues.....
Had I avoided it, it might have saved the aggrivated IT Band from flaring at that time.
Note to self: NEVER sandwich a hilly half marathon in between two weekends where you run a 21 miler in 9:55 & a 20 miler in 10:07........never, never, never...
Had I just run a shorter, less hillier, route in my 'hood, I know I wouldn't have pushed the pace down.
(What was my time on that thing? Something like 2:03 & change? So, it wasn't worth it. Live & Learn!)

Anyway, to any Patriots fans out there, I'm sorry.  It's not Wes Welker's dropped pass that doomed them.  It was a team effort.  I think Brady is an AWESOME QB but that super model wife of his needs to shut her mouth.  I just watched video of her temper flaring when someone yelled at her that "Eli Manning owns her husband!"  Apparently, she said something to the effect that Brady can't throw & catch the passes. Something tells me that Eli's wife, Abby from Franklin, TN,  would have kept her mouch shut but who knows....  People do things when they're provoked or highly upset that they normally wouldn't do.

I hope one day we see one of Brady's sons playing against a Manning boy.  (Peyton has twins, a boy & girl, Cooper has kids, too!). Now that's running history deep into the future, my friend. ;-)

Today, I think I'll try to work in some P90X Core Synergistics after I get out of the chiro/massage office.
We still have a light week of running ahead of us. Our long run is still just 6 miles this week. February will tick away before you know it!

Did I mention I love football?

....and I love how this one turned out!  :-)  Can we say "repeat"?

Super Bowl Sunday

Every year you'd think it was a "holiday" with me. ha!
We have chili, sausage stars, organic onion dip, rotiel dip, veggie tray, & cheese cake for our small little gathering.  ;-)

I went out for a 5 mile recovery run...keeping it slow with the heart rate monitor on telling me to STAY SLOW.  I moved Monday's 4 miler to today & added an extra mile since I knew it would be slow. (11:32 pace...so many hills in this 'hood)
I also did ab ripper, stretched, & Ice'd the devil out of my ankle.  I feel pretty good right now.

Hope everyone had a GREAT weekend!

Hello "On the Right Track"!  Glad you're rooting for the Giants, too!!!

Neutral? Really? REALLY?

It did feel great to get in ALL my little runs this week. I am totally grateful for the awesome chiropractor & massage therapist in my 'hood. Someone must have hit me with a stupid stick to not notice their office at the front of our 'hood. Seriously, I'm kicking myself for not going there last Fall!

Todays 6 miler was 6.14 per my garmin at a 9:22 pace. At least I'm not slowing down on these weekend runs. The concrete sidewalks plus the last couple of hills on the concrete sidewalks were killing my legs but I'll live. The ankle wrap did well, got it on just right, I guess...the rain held off & started about 10 minutes after we finished. I hung around for the nutrition clinic & ended up buying some wafer-like stingers. They dissolve in your mouth really well. I got the honey & the vanilla pure natural energy Stinger Waffles. I just wonder how well they'd hold up in a zip lock bag for 13.1 miles much less 26.2. I can't stand to chew the beans while running. I did ok with the shot bloks last Fall but I'd like to get away from anything that's gooey.  My hands get sticky & it's hard to get anything like that out of the bags most of the time.

I also got fitted for new shoes. Hello, the dude put me in Mizuno Wave 15's after watching me run in them several times!! I was shocked!  He looked at the shoes I had just run in which were my Saucony Omni Progrids (bought last summer/early Fall).  He noticed my arch is rubbing the insert too much, wearing it away. The insert was put in there not long after I bought the shoes.  Typically, I retire my shoes after about 225-250 miles because it's around that mileage that I feel like there's no cushion in them anymore.  I generally keep about 4 pairs that I rotate.  He measured my foot several times to make sure I was wearing the right size. (I wear a 9 running shoe but wear 8-8 1/2 in regular shoes).  Turns out he liked the fact that I was in a 9 but he thinks they're too wide for me.  I've been buying 9B.  He put me in a narrow 9.  Man, what a difference! I felt like I had a little more support & they were so much lighter!  To accommodate the slight overpronation that I have he put the black super feet in them.  Turns out the black ones only stablize the heel.  The greens were stabilizing my arch a little too much.  (Like I said, the arch of the greens were rubbing my foot.)  He pointed out that the area on the arch that was worn down was directly across from the sore tendon area.  (Confused yet?)

Anyway, I'm in "experimental mode" right now with my new NEUTRAL, NARROW shoes so time will tell. He basically told me that the saucony omni progrid was just a little too much shoe for me & that he didn't observe enough pronation problems to warrant staying in them. So, who knows...  I do love the fact that these shoes feel so much lighter. I felt like running that 6 miler all over again when I put those shoes on and that's no lie.  I love the feel of new running shoes.  ;-)  Neutal running shoes?  really?  for real?  I kept asking him as if he was full of it but he assured me, "The Saucony omni's really could be part of the problem with the IT Band."  That's when I said, "Ok, I'll take them."  ha!

I had a super productive morning......I picked up one of Joey's b-day gifts at the bookstore in our neighborhood & got a late breakfast at the coffee shop in our 'hood.  Spreading the $ in our local businesses.  ;-)

We've pre-prepped our Super Bowl food for tomorrow.  Can't wait to catch up with Hannah & Jeff.

TGIFriday & happy Super Bowl weekend!!!!!!

Being the SEC fan that I am...I "heart" Eli. ;-)
Back in '08 when they played the Pats in the Super Bowl, I watched it with the Heusers. We screamed a lot that night as you can imagine if you watched that game. I like Drew Brees too but honestly that was the last time I really enjoyed the Super Bowl in a big way! And as for Madonna & the other half time acts, I think it's going to be the best half time show we've had in a long time. (the haters on Facebook have obviously never seen her in concert)
Joe & I are having the Heusers at our place Sunday along with Stanley (their old dog named after the Stanley cup) ha!  I can't wait to run this weekend & I can wait for Sunday night football!!!!!!!

no cracks...just some tendon issues

So, I have some tendon tears that are causing the off and on pain in the right calf/ankle area.
This is all due to the fact that my LEFT IT Band has been "wonky" since last Oct & the fact that I sprained my right ankle really bad in May of '09 by rolling it off the front porch. (Yes, bad sprains can haunt you for years.)

I can run, though....with a wrap looking thing on my ankle. If you watch football, Roethlisberger had to wear one the last few games he played. You can run in them just fine. The trick is getting them snug enough but not too snug to allow for the swelling while running long distances.

So, anyway....I signed both Joe & myself up for the Chicago marathon this afternoon. Chances are the weather will be too hot for either of us to run that well but we're going. We're finally crossing it off our list. So, here's to some HOT, HUMID Tennessee running this summer/early Fall.  Cheers!!

Chicago Marathon

Today at noon registration opened...
I'm waiting until after Dr. Holmes looks at my MRI scans tomorrow.
So many what ifs, whens, maybes with signing up for a marathon.
You don't want to sign up, get injured, & lose your $ but that's the chance you take every time.
I've lost $ on the Birmingham, AL Mercedes marathon, which was only $55 at the time due a horrific sinus infection (plus I didn't know I already had the tibia stress fracture).
I lost around $30 on a bike ride I couldn't attend but as long as the $ goes to charity somewhere I'm ok with it...disappointed but ok. Luckily, I think that's all I've ever DNS.

This morning: ab ripper this morning & P90X Stretch this afternoon.
Tomorrow: 3 miles in the morning, hopefully, & Jillian Michael's yoga in the afternoon.
