Since the main road of our 'hood is going through some "renovations" & part of the street lights are out, I took the cowards way out yesterday. I ran 3.5 miles easy on the deathmill, 35 minutes on the bike, & ab ripper.
Today, I'm doing 30 minutes of Jillian Michael's yoga.
This Sunday is my birthday.....I'm turning 46.
Amazing that I've lived this long. LOL! I plan to at least double that. ;-P
Honestly, it won't surprise me if I do live until I'm 92+ years old.
My dad's parents & grandparents lived into their 80's & 90's.
(Mom's side of the family is/wasn't that healthy. Sorry, but it's true.)
How does it feel to make it to my mid-40's?
Well, I don't have anything that I'm taking meds for except allergies & migraines.
No high cholesterol, no high blood pressure, no depression, no obesity, etc....
Heck, I'm only about 7 lbs heavier than high school weight.
I'm running faster than I ever have in my "running" life.
I barely drink at all & I've never even put a cigarette to my mouth.
Nobody can ever accuse me of abusing my body.
I'm as healthy as a horse as they say....why do they say that?
So, to those who ask me what my secret is....there it is & I know I've been LUCKY.
Age 46, I'll take it & run with it! ;-)
Tomorrow, Joe & I will trek over to the Franklin Square along with more than a few other NRC runners to do the "Jingle Bell 5k". I'm going to do a 3 mile warm up & allow myself at least 10-15 minutes to rest before the race starts. My 5k PR is 24:40 so I should beat that barring anything crazy happening to my body but you never know. The most important thing is to get 14 miles on my legs tomorrow.
After I cool down a bit & catch my breath, I'm going to finish up my 14 miles for the day. We have the "Rudolph Red Nosed 5k" downtown Nashville before the parade next Friday night & that will be our LAST race of the year. I will NOT be wrapping anymore "training" miles around a race anytime soon.
To those running the St. Jude Marathon in Memphis this weekend, Good Luck! ;-)

Run # 2 on "2 a day Wednesday"
5:01 miles - 8:12 pace - 41:06
Mile 1: 8:34
Mile 2: 7:55
Mile 3: 7:56
Mile 4: 8:19
Mile 5: 8:16
.01: 8:23
I did get in a 1.16 mile warm up before we started.
Next time I need to wear something over my mouth. My lips got numb. It was colder than I expected it to be.
Happy hump day!

Run 1: "2 a Day Wednesday"
We got out the door about 5am & Channel 5 news had 33 degrees on the screen. Ouch! Other than the 34 degrees that we started running in when we did the Indy 1/2, this was by far the coldest run I've done since....probably Jan or Feb of this year.
The plan: 1.5 miles easy, 1 mile hard, 1.5 miles easy
I'm not stressing my body with much "speed work" this week or next since we have two 5k races less than a week apart.
We ended up with 4.3 miles....I decided to take a little extra time to recover...
4.3 miles-8:35 pace
Mile 1: 9:01 (this mile had most of the hills)
Mile 2: 8:05 (the fast mile started in the middle of this mile...my "coach" didn't time me)
Mile 3: 8:16 (the first half of this mile was "speed" & the 2nd half was recovery/walk breaks)
Mile 4: 8:41 (cool down & headed back to the house)
.3 : 9:34 (uphill & to the stretch wall we go)
Note self: Joe is usually out of it when we run in the mornings. Remind him to "time" my speed work so I'm not having to constantly look at my garmin while gasping for air. ;-P He did say that he thought that "mile" was around a 7:20-ish.
The plan for the run with the club tonight is to do 5 FLAT miles at a comfortably hard tempo pace.
Then eat mexican... ;-) We are meeting in the Town Hall in Nolensville now but I think I'll do a one mile warm up before going inside. I won't be 33 degrees at least. That should give me 10.3 for the day.
Tomorrow is the usual gym day with time on the bike.
I'll jog there & back for two miles & I'll do ab ripper. Got to keep the core strong!
Friday will likely be 30 minutes of yoga.
Saturday morning: 3 mile slow warm up at a 9:-9:30 pace, rest about 10 minutes, do the 5k, then a few miles cooling down. I'm going to add enough to get in 14 miles total. This will likely be the ONLY race where I have to wrap my long run around it during this training cycle.
Next Saturday, we are doing 15 miles & it's going to start getting "real".
As in "marathon pace REAL".
The week we're in Michigan, I'll cut back to around 12 miles probably on the 23rd. My last long run of 2012 will likely be a 16 miler. The ramp up is right around the corner!

catching up
When we got back Saturday afternoon, we put up a tree, wrapped gifts, bought angel tree gifts, did laundry, etc... We had the kids so they helped pick out gifts too. Our December looks crazy. For instance, it looks as though that this weekend will be the only weekend that we'll have both kids under the same roof at one time. (other than when we're in MI)
Sunday is my birthday so we'll celebrate my birthday & let the kids open their Christmas gifts from us since we'll be driving to MI on the 21st. (We're not squeezing their gifts in with suitcases & the MI gifts, then bringing their gifts all the way back on the 26th.) Yep, sounds nuts but that's how we have to roll in December. Schedules have been thrown in a blender & mashed up. LOL!
This weekend Joe & I are doing the Jingle Bell 5k in Franklin & I'm also going to add 10.9 miles around that race. (Probably a 2.5 mile warm up, then add the rest after the 5k.) We have the kids on Sunday so I'm going to keep Sunday's work out as is for now. It's about time to crank up the week day runs again.
This weeks training:
Sunday: 3 miles with short speed intervals, ab ripper, 30 minutes on a bike at the gym, 20 minutes elliptical, & all my weight machines
Monday: 30 minutes of Jillian Michael's yoga
Tuesday: 4.5 miles - 8:49 pace (supposed to be a progression run but the last mile I had tummy issues)
Mile 1: 9:24 (trying to adjust my new tights & warming up
Mile 2: 8:23
Mile 3: 8:18
Mile 4: 8:43 (still adjusting tights & hating the hills)
.5 : 9:43 (took walk breaks, tummy issues)
This afternoon, I'm heading straight to the gym to roll out my IT Band. I can tell I didn't roll it enough last week since I didn't take the roller to Texas. I'm going to do the bike for 35 minutes & then go home for ab ripper.
I'm tempted to do a "2 a day Wednesday" tomorrow but not sure what distances....ummmm....

Good bye Texas
Yesterday we ran 6.1 easy, fairly flat miles at around a 9:30-ish pace. Between running & dog walking I think we did pretty good burning off extra calories.
Today we fly out at 1:10pm & I've declared today a rest day since I've run 4 days in a row. My body is craving yoga & ab ripper. LOL!
Tomorrow I'm going to attempt some speed work, ab ripper, stretching, & hit the weights at the gym.
I finally had time to finish "Unstoppable". Great inspirational read.
Can't wait till next weekends 5k!

Thanksgiving week runs so far...
Tues: 4.5 miles easy 9:34 pace, ab ripper, & 20 mins on bike at gym
Wed: 7 miles tempo 8:33 pace with some hills (ugh, little too dehydrated for this run)
Mile 1: 8:44
Mile 2: 8:27
Mile 3: 8:48
Mile 4: 8:00
Mile 5: 8:32
Mile 6: 8:46
Mile 7: 8:34
59:51 time
Today it was cooler, overcast, & cloudy so I suggested getting the "long run" done. We took water & nuun with us, of course. I was way more hydrated.
13.1 8:48 pace, 1:55:24
Mile 1: 9:11
Mile 2: 9:02
Mile 3: 8:55
Mile 4: 8:34
Mile 5: 8:37
Mile 6: 8:38
Mile 7: 8:36
Mile 8: 8:35
Mile 9: 8:36
Mile 10: 8:55
Mile 11: 8:56
Mile 12: 8:48
Mile 13: 9:09
.1: 8:13
We eased into it & tried to stay steady. I am pretty happy with this run since i ran it on tired legs. I never run long the day after a tempo run!
I want my marathon pace at 8:50 or slightly below. I do NOT want to BQ by the skin of my teeth. I want to know that I will be able to register for Boston once I qualify. I have a lot of work to do but I feel stronger than ever. :-)

Viva La Diva Race Report
On Thursday, I got a text from Joe telling me I needed to look at the NRC facebook page. Apparently, CB from Fleet Feet Nashville had told Scott (our run club President) that she was giving away 5 free entries to the Viva La Diva race. (10 miler or the 5k) I'm all about FREE & I needed 12 miles anyway. So, I went to the Martin Center to register for the 10 miler right after work. I figured I could do 2 easy warm up miles before & then give the 10 miler everything I had & I did. LOL! I ended up getting 2nd in my age group with a time of 1:22:20, 8:14 pace. It was cold which was GREAT but the hills were a bit crazy. 4 of us from the club ran the 10 miler, I think...and several ran the 5k. Joe made a sign & came along to cheer us.
I'll give my splits per my garmin results. Apparently, my garmin gains a little bit. Go figure? This course was hilly but apparently it was hillier last year. They took the biggest hill out, thank God. When I looked a my splits I knew right where I took my short little 20-30 second walk breaks. I'm amazed I'm running this fast because honestly, after mile 5 I felt like I was running extremely slow. My legs were thrashed on those hills. Today I actually had a little bit of calf soreness (forgot to wear my compression socks to bed for recovery). I've not had much soreness since a day or two after Chicago.
10.16 miles - 8:08 pace - 1:22:32
Mile 1: 7:32
Mile 2: 7:25
Mile 3: 7:58
Mile 4: 8:15 (walk break on a hill)
Mile 5: 7:28
Mile 6: 8:37 (walk break on a hill)
MIle 7: 8:18
Mile 8: 8:38 (walk break on a hill)
Mile 9: 8:08
Mile 10: 9:00 (2 walk breaks on hills)
I seemed to hang with Vickie S. until about mile 5 or 6 then I let her go on those hills. She's a great runner & she kept encouraging me a long. That meant a lot to me. Thanks, Vickie!
Would I do this race again? Probably not. If it fit my training schedule & I got another free entry, sure, but I can run these types of hills for free in South Nashville/Nolensville. ;-) The shirt was nice & my age group award was pretty cool. See pic in the previous post. The course is not ideal for a 10 mile PR but I did set a new PR for the 10 mile distance. The only 10 mile race I've run is, of course, the hilly Moon Pie race in hot, humid June. So, yes, I have 4 NEW PRs set since Oct 7th. I'm pretty excited about that since my goal after Chicago was to get faster. We now have the New Orleans marathon training that has essentially already started. I'm hoping we can do 13 miles while in TX next week. (note to self: pack fuel belt & running fuel)
Saturday night we went to an 80's birthday party for one of the NRC club members. It was SO MUCH FUN! Joe dressed up in his high school letterman's jacket & I wore some of Jessica's clothes. Yes, the girl wears some things that look straight out of the 80's, no kidding!
I also went to the Flying Monkey Marathon today with some ladies from the NRC run club to help volunteer at the clubs fuel station. We had a great time & it certainly gave us all a bit of much needed inspiration. Our club Rocks!

Free Entry to a race!
I'm pretty excited. CB of Fleet Feet Nashville had our run club president post on the run club's facebook page that she had some free entries into the "Viva La Diva" race. It's a 10 miler or a 5k. I chose the 10 miler. I need 12 this weekend so I'll just had two miles on the front end to get warmed up.
I think there's at least 6 or 7 of us from the run club that are doing either the 5k or the 10 miler.
All we have to do is run in our Fleet Feet gear & if it also has Nolensville Run club on it, then all the better. I'm fired up. I hope I do well. The course is rolling to hilly but from what I've heard they did take the BIG hill out of it from last year. It's starts at 8:00am tomorrow morning so I actually get to sleep in a little. We were originally going to get out for 12 miles at 7:00am.
Happy Weekend!! ;-)

Wednesday Run with NRC
I did a "two a day" sorta...
3 mile warm up on hills with Steve K. 9:36 pace
We had probably a 20 minute break before I ran with Joe.
Mile 1: 10:00 (Walk break on a hill)
Mile 2: 10:07 (Walk break on a hill)
Mile 3: 8:42
Tempo run with hills: Goal: Keep it comfortably hard.
I did take about 3 short 20 second walk breaks on three different hills.
6.35 miles with Joe on hills: 52:41 8:17 pace
Mile 1: 8:57
Mile 2: 8:33
Mile 3: 8:00
Mile 4: 8:02
Mile 5: 8:19
Mile 6: 8:03
.35: 7:32 (downhill & flat to the finish)
9.35 miles on a Wednesday night. I'll take it.
I ate a cupcake & a piece of the Ragnar cake. I'm GLAD I ran 9+ miles! ;-P
We celebrated 2 birthdays & Ragnar. Wish I had taken a pic of the Ragnar cake.
It had the Ragnar Relay symbol on it.

Regrouping & Races
Since the relay, I've taken it a bit easy.
I still feel really good. No weird aches & pains.
It is time for me to get my running stride evaluated & get new shoes.
Sunday: Rest
Monday: ab ripper, an easy 3 miles @ 9:50 pace, & 30 minutes of yoga
Tuesday: 35 minutes on bike, 35 mins on elliptical, & weight machines
Wednesday: ab ripper, 2 mile warm up & then run 6+ miles of hills with Joe
Next Wednesday, I'll most likely bring back my "2 a Day Wednesday" runs.
It's going to take my body more time to warm up now that it's 30-40 degrees at 5am.
This weekend we have 12 miles planned for Saturday morning.
Joe has a "pace" planned so we'll see how that goes.
Up coming races:
Dec 1st: Jingle Bell 5k in Franklin, TN
Dec 7th: Red Nosed Reindeer 5k, Nashville, TN (kicks off the parade downtown)
That will likely be it for us for 2013. I was going to do the Tim's Ford State Park race but I'm tired of us going out of town almost every weekend. LOL! We chose the Jingle Bell 5k in place of it.
I would LOVE to find a flat 10k in the next 4-6 weeks.
I did find this one in Hendersonville on Jan 1st.

Ragnar Relay 2012 Report:
"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Ferris Bueller
How do I "stop and look around once in a while"? I lace up my running shoes & move. LOL!
This weekend was all about being on a team.
I was asked sometime over the summer by Danielle to join a Ragnar relay team that had formed with members of the Nolensville Run club. Overall, I think there were 4 teams with various members from our club but we had two that were pretty much 100% NRC (Shawn S., we consider you ours even though you live in CA. LOL!).
I said "yes" to taking Adrianne's spot, knowing full well I still had months to train for Chicago, then I had the Indianapolis race the weekend before the relay. Had Chicago been a sweatfest & I had run the full marathon in Indy, I was still going to participate but I was going to ask for some short "legs". I am really happy that Chicago had great running weather on the 10-7 & I could switch to the 1/2 marathon race in Indy.
I kept the "legs" I was given & ran quite well even when tired. If there's anything I've learned living in TN, there is no such thing as a "FLAT" route. Sure we have a few 5ks that are flat but even the notoriously flat "Tom King 1/2" has a "notsobad" hill at mile 9. When I initally looked at my "legs" for this relay, I thought, "Oh, they don't look too bad, mostly flat, maybe..." Nah! I was wrong. Zack (van 1) & David (van 2) had our worst "legs" but everyone had at least one "leg" that was pretty bad as far as hills. If you didn't have hills then you had traffic & weird road hazards to deal with or both. I'm glad I did it. I got to experience the "leg" routes that Van 2 does since we were in Van 1 two years ago at the first RRTN. Our van 2 drove down with van 1 to watch the start, which was great for the people new to Ragnar who were in van 2. Since van 2 didn't get to sleep in, it made for a very long, sleep deprived night but you tend to get "2nd winds" & thank God, there's apparently a "3rd wind".
When we got to Jasper to take the first hand off from Van 1, I found Michelle H. & Traci B. I had no idea that Michelle was on Traci's team. We had run quite a bit over the summer with Traci. I used to run with Michelle all the time back in '05 & '06. I've known Michelle since she was 15 & was 18. I've not seen Michelle in at least 3-4 yrs! Too funny! At the Healthways exchange I was all too happy to let her roll herself out on my foam roller.
Our team took off at 11:00am. I think we finished sometime around 3:15, 3:30, or 4:00pm Saturday. (I was so tired I can't remember.) The order for our van was as follows:
Runner 7: David D., Runner 8: Shawn S., Runner 9: Matt F., Runner 10: me, Runner 11: Kristy, Runner 12: Shawn B. (Van 1, obviously had the first 6 runners)
Per my garmin, first "leg" started at 5:46pm somewhere in Tracy City/Sewanee.
(6:54 mi - 53:20 - 8:09 pace): It was rolling, my legs were fresh, & I think I passed at least 2 guys. (Two other guys caught me & passed me right at the end.)
Two of these miles were at a 7:57 pace. ;-) I handed off to Kristy H. who ran through the "University of the South". When she finished, she said something along the lines of "I smelled pot while running past the frat houses." LOL! Kristy was hiliarious & I'm glad we got to know one another a lot better.
After our first set of "legs" ended, we camped out inside the gym of South Middle School. They had bean bags & wrestling mats out on the gym floor. I collapsed into a bean bag & rested my eyes. I never slept any at all. I think we got there around 8:30-9:00pm. We left out of there at 11:30pm for our next "legs" which started in Lynchburg. This is where I started noticing the changes they've made to the course. Van 1 doesn't hand off to Van 2 behind the Lynchburg square anymore. Ragnar uses the Lynchburg High School now. Who knew?! I should've got myself up to date on the changes but dang, we've been so BUSY lately! Thank you, Matt, for studying ALL our "legs". I think he nearly had streets memorized!
The middle of the night "legs" seem the scariest to me. David's "leg" from the school went to the hwy my friend, Elaine lives off of then it goes off from there to some very narrow, dark, country roads. We overheard one runner say that he saw some glowing eyes staring at him off the side of the road. One runner said he saw a skunk run across the street but thank goodness nobody frightened him. Can you imagine if you got sprayed?! Ugh! At the end of David's 2nd leg there was a crappy little store where I got to go in & use their bathroom. It was here we spotted a van with a Justin Bieber poster on it. Too funny! I can't remember the name of the team but I do know they were an Ultra team from Memphis (only 6 runners) & one of their runners had got sick. They were dividing the remaining "legs" between 5 people! I really don't think I'll ever want to be on an Ultra team ever. Some dude was overheard saying how he tried to catch David but couldn't. Too funny!
My 2nd "leg" was supposed to be 4.1, I think, but it turned into 4.27. I got a little disoriented, missread a sign & stopped in the middle of it. I waited on a runner to catch up to me to make sure I wasn't lost. I was heading out of Shelbyville at 2:38am. At the end, my garmin read (4.27 mi - 34:59 - 8:11 pace). Mile 3 was a 7:58. That was the mile where I tried to hang with the fast girl that I had waited on when I was wondering if I was lost. The mile just before that was an 8:26. Pretty good since I stood around for about 30-45 seconds wondering if I had taken a wrong turn. LOL! I need to stop 2nd guessing myself when running in the dark. ;-P
My 3rd "leg" was in daylight. I had never really warmed up since we left Nolensville on Friday & I was really looking forward to being warm. Yes, I know I LOVE cold but to actually be cold for that long was getting "old". The wind had picked up so I still had goosebumps on my legs. I had run in capri tights & a long sleeve the first two legs but now it was time to run in shorts & a sports bra. I started my final "leg" at 12:30pm Saturday. (6.47 mi - 57:49 - 8:55 pace) This was by far my hilliest "leg" & it was 66 degrees. The first mile I was stuck behind several girls on a very narrow road with heavy traffic. At one point the gal in front me leaped over a dead squirrel. I did the same since it was either jump into traffic or the ditch. I chose to jump over the squirrel. My body warmed up quite a bit & it felt like it was 86 degrees to me by mile 4. I was MISERABLE!
I was drenched when I finished but I was DONE! Whoo Hoo! At one point on this "leg" I came to an area somewhere near Percy Warner. They had the "turn sign" way off to the right. I was running against traffic & I got a good little sip of water from David at this point. I then headed towards the sign but couldn't read it unless I walked around & right up to it. It was facing a weird direction to where I almost had to back track to see what it said so I screamed to everyone, "Which way do I go?!" Ugh, I was annoyed. They should have had better placement of that sign or put a volunteer over there with a flag. So odd. This "leg" went past a lot of HUGE homes. It was a beautiful course & the first half of it was an area where I had plenty of shade. I'm betting this is the area where a lot of country music stars live. Lots of gated properties. Joe had described this "leg" to me via text message since his van had already gone through there. The last 3 miles were hilly as hell with little to no shade. I had to stop for two redlights going UP HILL. I suffered but at least I got a little rest at the redlights. I was totally surprised at the 8:55 pace. I had one mile that was 10:06. That had to be the mile where I was waiting on lights & walking uphill. I was so happy to hand off to Kristy near the Belmont area.
It was so nice getting to know a few other runners in the club & getting to know Shawn S. I truly did enjoy the adventure. I know it sounds crazy, especially to non-runners but you haven't lived until you've run a relay. It doesn't have to be an overnighter to be fun. This one was fun in 2010 when we ran it with my Manchester peeps but it was even more fun this year with so many familiar faces out on the course. Will I ever do it again? Maybe? I try to never say never to too many things.
Scott has already put out a post on the NRC facebook site asking this very question. I think for now Joe & I will offer to volunteer. We can always bring the kids with us if we do that & we have them that particular weekend. (Looks like it might be the last weekend in Oct next year.) If for some reason someone gets injured, I'm sure one of us can/will step up to take those "legs" in whatever van needs a replacement. Again, it was a tiring but fun weekend. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did & if you didn't participate, I hope you had a wonderful weekend run/race.
Since I'm too busy to organize/download the pics (all are on facebook) I'll just throw somemore random pics below that I took with my iPhone. Again it was a tiring but super fun weekend.

Grateful
In the last few weeks, I've had two friends lose a parent. I have a cousin who's battling kidney stones & this same cousin's husband's parents had a huge barn fire recently. This caused my cousin's husband's vehicle to blow up with his cell phone in it. Are you confused yet?
Not to make light of any of this because it's had our heads spinning lately. What I'm getting at is that I'm VERY thankful & not just because it's the month of Thanksgiving. I've been very thankful for a long time. We've been blessed & we realize it. We are blessed to have our health & our extended families are doing very well right now. Being happy & healthy are what's most important to us as I've stated over the years on this blog. We've been very fortunate to find friends in our running club that have motivated us beyond our wildest dreams this year. Again, I am so thankful that we've been so lucky & blessed. ;-)
Last night's run with the club went like this...
Arrive at the town hall that we're now meeting at on Wednesday nights.
Jump out of car & put on reflective gear, lights, etc...
Give Jason L. a reflective vest to borrow.
Jason & I take off before everyone arrives for a 2 mile warm up.
I needed it. It felt cold to me. What I've noticed lately is that the cold feels colder to me than it usually does. I'm going to make myself believe that I have less body fat keeping me warm these days. LOL!
We come back & I'm warm now.
We listen to annoucements & take off.
In my head I knew I needed a solid tempo run last night.
I ran a 2 miler (round trip to the gym on Tues & did a short recovery run Sun morning)
Of course this tempo run is the hilly 5 mile route.
5.24 miles - 44:13 - 8:26 pace
Mile 1: 8:32
Mile 2: 8:37
Mile 3: 7:52
Mile 4: 8:19 (yanked up my NEW sz small capri tights that were slipping down on me. What?!)
Mile 5: 8:57 (hills started getting to me)
.24: 8:04 (down hill & flat to the finish)
2 mi warm up was 9:00 min pace
Mile 1: 9:32
Mile 2: 8:27
7.24 miles for me yesterday. No running today since we're running Ragnar & I think my "legs" total just over 17 miles. I'm going to make an attempt to do yoga tonight after I drop off supplies to our van pick up people & I've got our packing to do. Our place looks like a cyclone hit it so I need to straighten things up tonight. No rest for the weary but I wouldn't have it any other way....I'm thankful for it all. ;-)

Ragnar Planning & other stuff...
On Sunday, we ran a very slow 4.6 miles around downtown Indy taking pictures of interesting statues & such... The legs felt fine. Absolutely no soreness whatsoever.
Monday, I did little to nothing. I did ab ripper & stretched when I got home from work.
I spent most of the evening cleaning up & getting laundry done.
Tuesday, I did Jillian Michael's yoga before work. After work, I jogged to the gym, did mostly arm weight machines, free weights, & rode a stationary bike for 35 minutes before jogging home. I actually jogged all the way up the STEEP hill that comes out at the front of the neighborhood without taking a short walk break on it. ;-)
This morning, I did ab ripper & IT Band exericises. This afternoon, I'm going to run with the club.
I'm thinking I'll get over there early enough for 2 flat miles to get my body warmed up. Joe & I will probably do 5 together with hills.
Our teams are nailing down last minute details for Ragnar this weekend. We're taking four 12 person vans with only 6 runners in each van. Tons of room for sure. We're all leaving sometime between 6:00am & 6:30am friday. We should all be finished by 2pm at the latest from what I gather from the pace predictions, maybe sooner.
I'm going to finish packing tomorrow after work. The weather is looking amazing for it. Not too hot, not too cold, not rainy, no sleet. When we did this 2 years ago, we had all kinds of weather going on but the most memorable moment for me was running down an extreme downhill with sleet hitting my face as I headed into Lynchburg. I'm in van 2 this time around so I won't be running in Lynchburg at all. I only agreed to do Ragnar this time around in order to see different parts of the course. I think this will definitely be the last Tennessee Ragnar we do. As for the Rutherford Relay we did in May, if I can get on a team, I'll do it again but if not no big deal.
Sunday, I'll likely sleep in & head to my gym at some point in the day.
Next week I hope to get into a "next marathon" run schedule planning mode.
I have a rough draft that I did weeks ago so now it's time to tweak it towards the chosen race.
We have decided which one we're going to do next & I pray the weather is good for it.
Remember how I said last December that I really don't care if I ever go back to New Orleans unless I come there to run their marathon? Well, guess what? We both registered & we have plane tickets bought. Southwest ROCKS with their New Orleans flights. We just need to book a hotel now. It's Feb 24th. I hope New Orleans is reasonably cool that day because I plan to rock "The Rock & Roll New Orleans Marathon."

Indianapolis Monumental HALF Marathon
Course:
It was Flat, Fast, & you start before daylight. It was cool seeing the lights on the buildings the first couple of miles. It's mostly asphalt but there was an area that wasn't very long that was more like a brick/concrete brick road. We stayed in a Springhill Suites hotel that was probably less than a quarter mile from the start. There are tons of hotels there so it's an easy walk to the start line from practically anywhere downtown.
They have corrals but they're not monitored. With a race this size there's really no need for it in my opinion. I didn't check to see how many runners did the race. There was the full, the half, & a 5k. The 5k started about 20 minutes after the longer races.
I believe they played some music at the start line but couldn't swear to it. I was trying to keep warm by huddling around a crowd standing behind the 8:00 min pace sign. It was around 34 degrees when we started in the dark. We ran around the monuments in Indianapolis, of course, winding our way around their downtown area & over into some nice neighborhoods. The best thing about it was that it was flat. I even counted 2 or 3 small down hills & at the very end there was a slight down hill. There was really only one slight uphill, which was in the last couple of miles. At the finish, they gave you water, low fat chocolate milk, a medal, a pull on winter hat, the usual foods, etc….but they also gave us a half sandwich with turkey on it from Jimmy John's.
Miles 1-5: It seemed REALLY easy to me. I felt GREAT & I did NOT want to slow down.
Mile 6-10: I started slowing down but still held on strong.
Miles 11-13.1: When I passed mile marker 10, I knew in my head that this was the longest I had run since Chicago but I still managed to keep up a respectable pace as you can see in the previous post. It wasn't until I approached these later miles that I felt like I was breathing hard. Yep, I know…all the hills I run on a routine basis…..gggrrr…still hate them. ;-P
Swag:
Awesome! Pull on cap, medal, & cool shirt. I LOVE plain white tech shirts. White reflects light more so than the dark colors. I'm sick & tired of teal or neon green race shirts. (Yeah, I know I never posted the Chicago medal or shirt. ;-P)
Expo:
It was small but it had most things you'd want or need to buy at the last minute. It was bigger than Carmel, Indiana's Expo but tiny compared to Chicago, NYC, or Nashville's. Our biggest purchases included two new reflective vests. They are super cool & I'll have to take pics of them when we run Ragnar this weekend. Both Joe & I are replacement runners...I've known for months I was running it but he just replaced someone last week. Should be fun!
We also went ahead & signed up for the Carmel Full marathon but that will very likely NOT be my "A" race to try to qualify for Boston 2014. It's my back up race, just like Indy was our back up race in case Chicago was hot n' steamy. I'm not fully convinced that we'll be blessed with cold temps again in Carmel, Indiana in mid-April but you never know. We only paid $55 each for the Carmel marathon! If we end up doing the half instead that's still rather cheap.

I'm still working on choosing my "A" race to try to qualify. It will very likely be in Feb or early Mar 2013. I figure I've got until the end of the year to decide. I feel GREAT & I’m getting faster. If you had told me 6 months ago I would get a PR in the Marathon, the 5 mile, & the ½ marathon all within a month, I would have shaken my head in disbelief. Thank God, I have Joe & other, FASTER NRC folks to pace me on these runs. If I can hold an 8:16 on a flat, cold half, I know I can eventually push my pace down well below a 9 for a cold, FLAT, full. It's going to take a lot more work but I can feel it.
We also went out to eat Saturday night with my friend, Hannah's mom. She lives in Indy. Always nice visiting with Rebecca. ;-)
We went to the NCAA Hall of Fame building. It's small but very interesting. I think we were in there about 2 hours.
We also went to the Colts - Dolphins game. The Colts won! It was pretty cool seeing a stadium that hosted the Super Bowl less than a year ago. When they flashed highlights from other games, they showed Peyton throwing a touchdown for the Broncos. The crowd cheered in the stadium. ;-)
All in all it was a great weekend....we now have a few days to recoup & then Ragnar weekend starts up bright & early Friday morning. No rest for the weary.
