Something other than fever sweat

I was too chicken to get outside by myself after work so to the deathmill I went...I was determined to get in at least 5 miles. (If I had to walk, I wanted to be toasty warm) It was jog/walk the whole time. Took me nearly an hour. I felt weak & my throat was still sore, but it felt good to sweat for the first time since Monday night & not have my ears literally burning with fever. I spent about an hour on the elliptical watching "Idol" & I'm shocked that the Bride of Frankenstein is still safe. I did my yoga ball crunches but I didn't leave until I scolded the teenagers for using them as basketballs. When I'm sick, I'm mean! :P

I'm really looking forward to my massage tomorrow & a rest day. I will set my alarm for 6:45am Sat morning & decide then if I should venture to FCF.

Yippee, it's almost Friday!

Deja vous & halucinations

My 2nd Dr Appt in 2 months was at 3:45pm today. Apparently, what I took last month was not strong enough. I got a shot in my JLo. They gave me 2 free drugs, one horse pill called Bidex-400 that I have to take 4X a day. (I hope I remember!). The 2nd drug is Allerx DF, white pill in the am & the blue one at night. The 3rd drug I had to get at the pharmacy. It's Avelox 400mg. As I walked around Walley World waiting on the 3rd drug, I felt like I was halucinating. The Doc said I had a 99.6 fever. I told them that I know I had a fever last night because I actually felt hot last night. It was hard to feel hot today with freezing temps. I stood coughing & laughing for probably 15 mins reading Hoops & Yo-Yo sound cards. I had to get one for Austin's Mar 15th b-day. When I finally picked up the meds, I went all the way out to the car & loaded everything BUT the meds. Thank God, I noticed. I ran back in to grab them off the counter in the pharmacy. (stupid!)

I decided I would stop at Appleslease for an oriental salad. As I waited, I just felt hazy. I remember looking up at one point at the TV to see the best halucination a gal could EVER see...David Carr with long hair. It must have been ESPN. On the way home I found myself really enjoying the new Mylie Cyrus song for some reason. :)
I put away everything & ate only 1/2 my salad. I was told I'm 4 lbs lighter than last month.

It almost feels like deja vous because it was EXACTLY this week last year that I got a full blown sinus infection. I went to the doc on Thursday & still managed to run Fall Creek Falls on Sat. Why should this year be any different? So, we'll see how I feel come friday night.

My flannel pjs are calling my name.

Choosing Chicken soup over cross training

I woke up with the start of a migraine & a sore throat on top of that. I didn't get enough sleep either. (Yes, I'm whining!) I never feel that bad internally that often, just the last month & a half! ha! Seriously, I get migraines but I control them with meds. I get maybe 1 sinus infection a year & yes, it's usually this time of the year when I do get them. This has NOT been a great start to the new year for me at all. I totally sympathize with Rae & her hubby. I know what they are feeling. I felt drugged when I got to work but a cup of coffee perked me up enough to get productive. I kept drinking hot herbal tea & sucking on cough drops. By lunch time, I started feeling better but then my neck felt & looked swollen & sore. I looked in the mirror. Yikes!! I looked like a "poopy slug" to quote Maritza. ha! The lady next to me asked me if I was alright about 4pm. I knew then that the gym was out. I worked on Hannah's shower invitations. They are all tainted now but they are going in the mail tomorrow.

I took a left over antibiotic from last month & had chicken noodle soup.
I've been in my flannel pjs since 5:30pm!

Tomorrow is another day. Happy Early Hump day! :)

Cross your fingers until mid-June

Just threw my name into the NYC marathon lottery. Entry #214021

I ran 6.05 with Wayne in his 'hood at a 9:06 pace. We are both slower than we were this time last year on our tempos. My runny nose & constant spitting sure didn't help my pace, but it was a good little tempo run nonetheless. (Thanks Wayne!) I spit so much during this run that my throat hurts. When will my personal hell end with this mess? At one point, I could NOT get air down. Other than that, it was so nice outside. You were missing something tonight if you did not get out. :)

30 mins elliptical to stretch out the legs & I did the evil AB machine.

Happy Monday! :)

Dinner, movie, & 1st time out training with Pam

Last night's dinner at "Bonefish" was awesome as usual. The tiny bits if ice in the pomegranate martini were divine. "The Bucket List" was great. Made me think & it almost made me cry. "Find what gives you joy in your life." I know what gives me joy now. They are age 13, 12, and 9. The other thing is being able to exercise, run, & be healthy. One day, all this could change but for now, I do have "joy". The only negative thing I have to say here is that the theatre was sold out. The woman next to me was having a hard time breathing. It was distracting. She was so big. She & her friend kept making comments, which is RUDE. She kept smacking her lips when she dug into her popcorn. If there had been two more seats available I would have moved!

Today, I got out with cousin, Pam, for her first "longish" miles. We did 5.5 miles of jogging/walking talking the whole way. It was a little colder than I thought it would be but we moved fast enough to keep our naked legs warm. Until today, she had never gone beyond 4 miles. (I'm thrilled whether she is or not! ha!) We took off from East Middle down to Macon & then around Tara & back to East. I then went to the gym, got in 1 hr 5 mins elliptical (watched indoor track & field on ESPN) and then I did weights.

Pam's son, Liam, got 1st place in his boy scouts pine box derby yesterday. His daddy, Tim, got 1st place when he was his age, too. Too cool! I wish I could have been there to see that.

Next Sunday, I hope Pam & I can do between 6-6.5. Next Saturday, will be Fall Creek Falls for me. It's a challenging course. I pray I don't totally bonk!

A funny thing happened on the way to Pilates....

Ok, 1st off, I used good judgement and didn't buy the boots. They were at Dillard's on sale for $43, I believe... I already have a pair that are hotter than those but the heels are a bit too high for me. I was looking to replace them but I voted "No" on these. My blog fan, "T", seemed disappointed. ha!

After buying stamps, I decided to kill a few mins this morning by going into the "Purple Cabbage" on Jackson. It's a girly, girl store to say the least. I wanted to see what they had as far as wedding shower stuff. The door sign said, "Yes, we are open." I walked in to a dark store setting off the alarm at 9:10am. So, I called Tullahoma's finest to let them know that this store was not open but it's doors are, etc... They said, "Oh yeah, we are getting an alarm signal right now. Where is the store?" I thought to myself, "If I had an alarm system blaring at my house, I hope the police would know where I lived, especially if I lived on the busiest street in Tullahoma!" Needless to say, the owners of the store were very apologetic. They were not amused that the Police had the address listed as a residence & not a business. I figured what's the difference. They didn't know where you were located anyway. So, I went on to pilates even though the police wanted me to wait. Hell, it wasn't my problem the business was "open" by the sign & the door was unlocked. I told them if they needed me they could find me at my gym. :P I got free orange tea for my trouble and FYI, the "Purple Cabbage" does not open until 10am, not 9am.

After pilates (Carlates), I ran a very slow, cold, windy 8.02 out in the country club area. I did some hills & at nearly every hill I had stomach issues. It brought me to a walk 3 different times but I still managed a 9:51 pace. The wind felt like it was cutting through me at places but it's done. I may go out tomorrow since the weather is looking much nicer. Hello SUNSHINE!

I'm off for dinner & a movie with some very entertaining company. :)

Cheers!

Boot Sale!

Are these hot or what???

Sweating to "Idol"

It really is hard to avoid the TVs at the gym when every single cardio machine has one attached. I don't have time for much TV but when I'm there, I'm usually plugged in just like everyone else. I believe the 4 they eliminated needed to go, especially the Leif Garrett lookalike. My money's on 16 yr old David Archuleta.

I did a very goobish thing last night. I have WAY too many Brooks Adrenaline running shoes laying around. My right foot had on a shoe with probably close to 260 miles, but my left shoe that I happened to put on probably had about 70 miles. Boy, I could tell a difference when I jumped on the deathmill to run. Wow! I really need to go through my running shoes & donate them. Needless to say, it was a jog/run/walk for an hour, 40 mins elliptical, & a few crunches.

Looking forward to a productive weekend. Hannah's bridal shower at Bonefish is coming together. I just need to get the invitations & make arrangements for the "Martini" cake to be made. ("Cheers to the future Mrs. Heuser") :) We are also in the early stages of planning a NYC trip at the end of June. Her wedding & honeymoon will be overwith by then. We're making it a "girl's trip" with my Jersey friend, Cheryl, joining us and very possibly Annmarie, who's in Rochester. I'm psyched!!!

Windy, dark, cold run...

Chris B. & I ended up with 6.04 in the cold, dark, wind in their neighborhood. We did hit some gradual slow upgrades in the wind. Brrr... Lots of spitting still but I felt good when we finished. I stretched my legs out on the elliptical for a slow 35 mins. He always makes me push my pace so that is always a good thing. We talked the entire distance so the pace was only 9:22, but I'll take that in this kind of weather. I know I would not have ran 6 alone last night that's for sure. Carla's foot is bruised, plus she's got some of the funk that's going around, bless her heart.

Not sure what I'll do tonight, just winging it these days.

I heard that the post race concert for this year's CMM was announced yesterday but I cannot find it anywhere on the internet. Anyone know?

Ok, I'll admit it, I am a little excited that Jason Taylor (of the Miami Dolphins) & Kristi Yamaguchi (Olympic figure skater) are going to be on "Dancing with the Stars". The athletes tend to do really well.

Just another day at my desk...

Well, it's official, we are locked out of our remote email address accounts at work. Meaning I can't check my charter or yahoo. Boo Hoo! I just finished my lunch & to my surprise I can get in here, see the weather, & read the strider's board, which is nice! Good Grief!

Last night's planned speed had to happen on the deathmill. My theory is that when I can't keep the honda straight on the road because of wind, then speed work for me at the THS track would be useless. There have been many times where I felt like I was going to be picked up & blown over to the baseball field. So, I did 3.1 with speed in the middle of it. No walking, just a slow 10 min pace jog in between. I did 35 mins on the elliptical & then another 35 on the bike while watching "Idol". The last two were the best. I'm not a huge fan but I tend to catch it at the gym. I realized when I went into the yoga room to knock out crunches on the yoga ball that my lower abs were sore from the AB machine the night before. Ouch!

Tonight, I'm running with Chris B. if nothing changes. Carla's foot/ankle is still a little swollen from last week.

Can't wait to get my NEW phone!

Happy Looney Tuesday!

Some of you may know that the State Park Running Series has "regulars" that run it every single year and most do nearly every state park race. Dan S. has a mailing list he usually (not always) sends out to recap recent races. He gave just about everyone a Looney Toon name. He's a hoot! I had to share it. Thanks to Terry Q's big mouth. I'm Tweety Bird. ha! These folks are great runners! I encourage everyone to try a TN State Park race at least once. It's a back to basics type of running and always great scenery.
Below is the latest. :)

Elmer here, First I want to apologize to all the Race Directors who had TSP Races in January and February for not Posting anything regarding their races, Elmer's been in a bit of funk called winter. He also was on the road, sick, injured and without phone service for a period of time.

Not A Lunar Year but A Looney Year Has Passed / A New Way, The Looney Way

The beginning of the so called Looney Tooners Sprang to life in the dead of winter on the third Saturday in February one year ago. Initiated by a flu bug, a butt kicking, and a bowl of hot soup. The flu bug was prior, the butt kicking was during and the bowl of hot soup was after.... Prior, during and after what you ask?
The last Frostbite Half-Marathon hosted at Montgomery Bell State Park. Six of us gathered at a Cracker Barrel following the race. Even though we had all raced each other for some years, we knew very little about each other and usually went are separate ways once race awards were dispensed. Something must have been in the air that day besides the snow, for each of us cold, tired and hungry yearned for something a little more out of that particular day......

And something a little more..... we all did get. Each of us and others, and even others..... after that, though out the year were informally labeled with Cartoon Character names that be fit our personalties, occupations and maybe aspirations. These names, used so much over the course of the last year, that are real names at times are stuck somewhere on the tip of our tongues or in back of our minds (some of us have lost our minds while others never had one to begin with). Even though we can't readily recall each others real names, we have come to know and appreciate each other. And by golly there are a lot of great personalites in this Looney bunch of runners.....

That initial gathering birthed Fred and Barney and their lovely better halves Wilma and Betty straight out of Bedrock. Followed by the First Edition of Sunday Morning Post recapping the events of that day told from a perspective we had not seen the likes of before. The newly named characters all seem to fit together so well as the story unfolded....

The real spice however developed in the e-mails that followed each Post. Anything from congratulatory remarks, to trash talking beat-downs, you name it, laptops everywhere across the State where clicking away to get in the latest dish or catch up on who slammed who. Yes, the mud was slung at times but all in good fun and it only helped to bond one to another (with maybe a few minor exceptions)....

Race after race, restaurant after restaurant, Post after Post the Looney Tooners were running, socializing around the lunch buffet and contacting each other via the Internet. Having more fun running than this Looney mind could imagine. At times the Post was a cartoon, a race report and sometimes just plain dribble (after all one can only take so much Fudd). On rare occasion the Post even rhymed like a poem or had lyrics that mimicked a famous Christmas song.

It was in a creative Christmas Card by Pan and Tink and the responses to the Christmas Eve Tribute that revealed a wealth of talented writers other than Elmer (who professes not to be one or have any talent as such). Pan, Fred, PC and even the Beast and others, I invite you to flip open your laptops and spread your own Looney lore in 2008, after all a few new perspectives and a little variety is the prerequisite to the Looney Way. Pick a race and Post away. Elmer's time constraints have tightened and will not be able to spend as much time this year pushing out the Post so your help is needed and encouraged to keep what we've started growing (promoting Loonies).

Those of you out there wondering how do you become a Looney in 2008 and join in on the fun.
Run... Eat...and hit Send Now..., sooner or later a name will surface and walla You too will be a Looney. You may already be a Looney and don't even know it. Here's the list as it stands at the end of one year.

28.John Spencer as Dilbert sometimes referenced as the above imposter

29.Vickie Spickard as The Beast (without beauty) who caused the Looney Toon Treasury to spend thousands on legal fees

30.Kinji Tanaka as Mr. Mogoo # 2 who knows nothing about the American Comics subculture as he is from Japan

31.Bruce Tanksley as Roadrunner who spends most of his time running in the mountains on trails go figure

32.Diane Taylor as Kim Possible as there is no race she can't run

33.Lisa Zaccarelli as Elmyra Duff the polar opposite of Elmer Fudd, "Duff" pronounced backwards is "Fudd"

34.James and Melodye Zahn as Barney and Betty Rubble truer friends are far and few between weather in Bedrock or Gotham City

The past year for Elmer was a good year in terms of running except for a few untimely injuries, and the loss of fitness as 08 was ushered in. Hopefully, Elmer can heal up get fit again and make a serious run at that elusive over 50 5:00 mile...........The past year was a great Year in terms of getting to know all you Loonies. Here's to hoping all of you reach your own goals for the coming year, even if your only goal is to become a Looney or meet more of them....

Cedar's Frosbite Half Marathon

Saturday was almost perfect for running as 405 runners set off to run the Inagural Cedars Frostbite Half Marathon. Elmer lead everyone thur the first mile (although he was in his car) actually Grantland Garrett took the race out hard for about 2 miles, only to be gobbled up by a pack of 5 so. The lead changed a few times but it looked as though every one was buying time and was content on letting Scott Fanning set the pace. Which was a good idea since he knew the course far better than anyone as he works in the Park as a Park Ranger. But it was Lance Winders who had sat on the pace while climbing the nearly 2 mile grade thur the 5 mile mark and set the tone on the downgrade. Most were fatigued as Lance pushed the pace and broke clear with everyone in tow. Lance mantained incredible rhythm thought out the remaining miles and strolled home to victory in 1:16:02, just over 5:45 per mile. The first Female was Andee Cranford in 1:26:55. Other Divisonal Winners were Masters: Jim Genet 1:24:21 and Theresa Peacock 1:30:46, Grand Masters: Charles Regan 1:22:32 and Sherri Giles (Tink) 1:44:17, Senior Grand Masters: Mike Wells 1:38:09 and Amelia Wallace 1:58:30, congrates too all.

Heckle and Jeckle and several other Loonies along with the throng of volunteers deserve a pat on the back for organizing and puting on such a good race. As for Elmer he would much prefer to Run the hills of Montgomery Bell along with it's smother pavement but understands and supports the reasons the race was relocated. The Loonies also had much fun at all the post race activites.

Seventeen TSP races run, with one to go and then the reward, the Banquet don't miss it. You never can tell what you might miss when Loonies are gathered.

Running Blogger Nerd

Ran 4.26 in the neighborhood. (so windy, blah)
40 mins elliptical
10 mins bike
4 reps on the AB machine

Was told Saturday's weather would be cold/rainy. I think I'd better try for 8 right after work on Friday.

Read a blogger's note today of how He/She didn't want to be a "running nerd blogger" posting ALL workouts. (I think that's how it went...) But He/She did post what they did for speed work. Personally, I like reading about people's progress, workouts, what worked, what didn't, what was fun, & what wasn't rather than reading a bunch of political bashing. So, running blog nerds unite! :P

Workin' out the kinks

Today:
1 hr 5 mins elliptical slowly, a few light leg & arm weights, yoga ball crunches, & lots of stretching... Quads were sore & legs felt heavy but I feel good. Going for 8 miles this coming weekend right after Pilates on Sat. :)

Testing my body on my 9th 1/2 marathon: Cedars of Lebanon

It was a test alright & for once it is positive. I'm not going to lie, RC & the Preds 5k did something to me mentally, not just physically. I NEEDED this 1/2 marathon today so very badly for my mental attitude.

The course:
I knew it wasn't flat & I knew it was not all asphalt. It's definitely rolling hills from the start to the finish. After the 1st hill at the .5 mark, I came out of my long sleeve tech shirt. I'm so used to taking clothes off while I run, I barely break stride or slow down for it anymore. :) I probably went out a little too fast because at mile 2, I was well under 18 mins. Two years ago, that would have meant I was out slow. Anyway, I ran according to how I was feeling & I was thanking God that I wore shorts instead of tights. I personally believe there were more than a few people overdressed. The course took us out of the park onto a main road going left then onto a side country road with a lot of really rough pavement. (reminded me of Happy Valley Rd on the Moon Pie course) That made my feet hurt a little. I tried to make sure I was on the smoothest part of that road. This road winded up, down, & around until about mile 8 where we took a left onto a gravel road. It was ok for a while but we were on it for 2+ miles, I think... GRAVEL + HILLS = SUPER SLOW RUNNING LISA. At one point, I nearly fell flat on my face but I caught my balance with my hands inches away from the gravel. (Pilates has made me a little bit stronger!) It was interesting to watch people in front of me jump from one side of the packed gravel (tire tracks) to the other to get around each other. The center of the road & the sides were big, heavy gravel. I was so glad to see the asphalt again that I wanted to kiss it. We hit the asphalt about mile 10 where we had caught up with the walkers, who started one hour early.

Tullahoma:
Some tinsy woman walking yelled at me, "R U from Tullahoma?" I managed a "yes" and she said, "I see you all the time & recognized you." I'm so bad with names & faces, plus if I had not been coming off 2 miles of hills & gravel I might have been friendlier but I took off like a rocket after that. I managed a surge for about a mile. I passed 2 women who incidentally were in my age bracket but I didn't know it. They passed me back when my quads started screaming around mile 12ish. It is because of them I did not get an age graded award. No biggie! I believe I was about 40 seconds or less behind one of them at the finish. (Again, it's all in who shows up, ya know...)

Finishing:
I was so glad to see the finish chute, but at the same time I was thinking, "You did it & you didn't leave all that much sinus drainage out there on the course." The 1st 4-5 miles was the worst of the drainage, but I backed off & seemed to do better. I did not have a coughing fit after I finished, & the feeling of getting sick to my stomach never came. My new PW & unofficial time is now about 2:08. There's no chip time for state park races & I never saw a list, but my Garmin read 2:08:11 by the time I exited the chute & headed towards the table for my little card.

Fall Creek Falls 15k:
2 weeks from today is the last state park race & even though it's hilly as hell the first 5 miles, I think I'll do it. I'll take the same approach I did today. Just finish! Incidentally, I did this race last year in just over 1:25, I think... I had a full blown sinus infection, was on high powered antibiotics, & ran in a fog. I ended up sleeping the rest of the day. So, I only remember the hills & throwing up at the end, sorry. :P

Have a great rest of the weekend everyone! :)

Happy V-day!

Had a busy day at work but Valentine's day was really nice. :)

Ran a slow, chatty 5.75 with Carla. We were going for 6 but she rolled her ankle & scared me to death. Bless her heart. I sure hope she can teach her aerobics class tomorrow. I got in my usual crunches & stretched. That's all time allowed on V-day. Hope everyone's had a great one!

In the spirit of Valentine's Day...from the Tennessean.

Brrrr....

Wed workout:
I bundled up for a slow 4.16 at a 9:22 pace after work. Only my face was cold but at the end it had sweat on it. I honestly believe if I ran in the Arctic Tundra, I'd sweat there, too.
40 mins slow on the elliptical, 30 mins on the bike watching "Idol" at the gym, & stretching rounded out my night.

Stupid TV:
Ya know that show, "The Moment of Truth" is disturbing, seriously. Thank God the strike is overwith. Too many dang shows that involve winning money, good grief!
Kudos to the beagle, Uno, that won the Westminster Dog show! My beagle lovin' sis in Texas probably loved that!

Unpredictable Weather:
The weather is just plain idiot crazy.....60 one day, high in the mid-upper 20s the next. People are dropping like flies around me.

Cedars 1/2:
I feel good about it. Tried to talk Terry Q. into holding my tissues while I run but he won't go for it. He did say that he'd follow me & my phlegm all the way from Tullahoma since he wasn't sure where the Park is located. (smart ass!) I also asked Chuck H. but he won't even do the race. Dang, what kind of friends are these people?! Gesh!

I wish I didn't have to work...

Getting off at 5pm Mon-Thur sucks. Friday, it's 7am-4pm, but Friday's are usually "rest" days for me. I watched it get up near 60 today & sunny. By the time I got off & got changed, the bottom dropped out. Carla & I had good intentions but it just didn't happen. I decided that the treadmill hurts me more than it helps me so I walked/jogged 3 miles on it in 32 mins, did 35 mins elliptical, yoga ball crunches, & some free weights on my arms. Tomorrow, I'll probably bundle up & get out in my neighborhood, who knows... I'm such a huge slacker these days.

I got bored during lunch & looked up all my 1/2 marathon times, probably to convince myself to go to Cedars of Lebanon this Sat. ha ha! If it's not raining cats & dogs, I'm heading there. It's a part of the state park series. So what if my running has been on the downslide. I know I can complete a half respectably even though it will probably be a PW. So, after reminicing about better, faster times, here are the halves. I LOVE the distance, seriously.

Slinging it

Well, the title says it all & it's on my left leg & down the front of my long sleeve tech shirt. It only bugs me while I run, which is why I'm HATING the running thing right now.

My calendar in my Outlook reminded me at about 2pm that I had a 6pm massage with Kirby. So, I decided to hurry home, change into running clothes, get the massage, & then head to THS for a short tempo run around the parking lots & a tinsy bit of speedwork. I managed 4 x 400s after a 3.5 mile tempo run. (It wasn't one of my faster tempos that's for sure) My 400s were about 12 secs slower than the last time I did them which was probably a month ago or longer. I walked in between each. The 4th one was the fastest. I did .85 around the school for a cool down. All in all, probably a good 5.5-5.75 miles total. I can live with that. I'm going to use my roller thing that I got at FF for my hip on my hammy's tonight.

There's got to be some relief in sight with all this sinus mess. I'm letting it run it's course but it's beating me down on my running. On the positive side, at least I don't have the flu like many others do right now.

Catchin' up with old friends, 6.11 miles of drainage, Yardwork, & a little movie called, "Juno"

Congrats to Michele & David for surviving & running well on those hills in Birmingham. :)
David set a PR!! If that had been flat, those two would have gone sub-4 that's for certain.

Fara & I spent 3.5 hrs at "J & G" Friday evening catching up on each other's lives. It was nice. I really missed her. Wish she'd run with me again but she's having lower back issues. She's a former ball player, High School/Motlow. She's done a few races with me including the inaugral Preds 5k, a Red Cross run in Brentwood, & Moon Pie all in '04, I believe...

Arlene & I spent 2 hrs in "Bonefish" last night playing catch up & then we saw "Juno". What a movie! I can certainly see why it's up for an academy award. Ellen Page is awesome as Juno (June Bug). There was a little bit of a running theme in there. The boyfriend ran track. I cracked up everytime I saw those boys in those yellow shorts. ha!

I did manage 10 mins on the stepper before hopping into Pilates yesterday. Carla should be locked up for the stuff she was making us do with rubber bands. :P I decided to go out for a test run. The IT Band seemed ok, it was the sinus junk that slowed me. So for 6.11 miles I ran, my nose ran, & I spit. There really is an art to it & I may be getting better at slinging it. :P
I took off from the gym over to Farrar then over into Carla's neighborhood down to West Middle & then back to the gym. I had to stop for traffic on Cedar lane 2x, stopped again to tie my shoes, & 2 more times to just spit & clear my throat. It was a messy 9:48 pace for 6.11 miles. I think I'll wear a bib around my neck to catch everything when I run tomorrow.

Today, I did yard work for over 2 hrs, mulching leftover fall leaves, raking, & picking up sticks. (I call it cross training!) I didn't get 100% done with it but I got tired of my nose running. I noticed that there are ton of wild onion. That may be a part of my problem!! Wild onion seems to be growing everywhere. I did make it to the gym for a quick 45 mins on the elliptical to stretch my legs. My hammy's were sore & I'm blaming the rubberband tricks from Pilates. :P

My MI relatives are suffering through a bitter cold. Their high today was only 7 degrees. They are all turning into hermits up there. I felt bad telling Patti that it was in the 50's here. She said that if it were in the 50's there, she'd put on her bathing suit & lay in the sun.

Tomorrow, I'm attempting another 6 miles, probably in my neighborhood before I head to the gym.

New & exciting experiences...well sorta...

I'm not a dare devil, but to a certain extent, I will try anything once as long as it's not scary. I've been forced to do things in the past that were scary but sometimes that's just life.
I'm all about the new & different as long as it's not illegal & doesn't hurt anyone else.

For instance the awe inspiring include standing on top of the Eagles Nest in the German Alps near Bertchtesgaden. Walking through an underground bunker. Eating black forrest cake in the Black Forest. I've held a piece of the Berlin Wall in my hands thinking of how many lives were lost trying to climb it. Climbing Diamond Head with my sister who was 6 months pregnant at the time was interesting. Ha! And, more recently, seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time with a very dear friend & running around the streets of NYC aimlessly was such a treat.

The more emotional things would include seeing the gifts from God, known as my nephews for the first time, seeing my grandma for the last time, seeing my ex husband get on a plane heading to the Gulf War, & surviving a bomb threat along with my PreSchool class several weeks later when the war started. Crossing the finish line of my first marathon or the first race I ever completed for that matter, seeing others do the same for the first time, & knowing that someone who worked REALLY hard met a goal have been inspiring. The list could go on and on...

The goofier things would include being lost in Savage Gulf for HOURS thinking I was going to have to spend the night & be eaten by animals, fighting a crowd of grown men for Peyton Manning's autograph, asking Chris Simms when the Titans players will be out on the ramp not knowing who he was (after a Tampa game at home), & making new, exciting friends via the internet.

Recently, it's been all about new & exciting things concerning my looks & health...Got my first facial, first glycolic peel, cut out most if not all red meat (not a big meat eater anyway), cut WAY down on caffeine, & totally cut out my diet cokes. I've been going to a chiropractor for years & getting massages. I highly recommend that to everyone. I've learned to LOVE Pilates because my body just doesn't snap back together like it did even 5 short years ago. Ok, you may want to stop reading at this point.......I'm going to talk about the Colon cleanse now! ha!

Well, I was nervous as you can imagine. It was a very simple 30 min procedure. The kicker here is that I've had a long week at work, sorta stressed a bit, didn't drink enough water over the last few days, & quite frankly the pizza that I had this week along with the Mexican cheese last weekend reeked havoc on my system. Of all weeks for me to not pay that much attention to what I put in my mouth. I mean really, I eat pizza maybe once every 6 months. Mozzarilla is the WORST cheese for our digestive system. So, due to my poor diet & lack of water this week, this was not the most pleasant experience. Do I feel ok? Sure I do, but that was the longest 30 mins I've spent in a while. It's amazing at how our bodies work, seriously. The crap we eat doesn't always go to places where it should go & therefore, we are storing toxins in our colon that can & will affect our health. Am I glad I went? Sure, but it was a bit weird watching crap go into the tube that had been attached to my colon. Don't get me wrong, when I run a lot, I have absolutely no problems with my system. Like most runners, what I put in solid has no problem coming out. Will I go back? Probably but I'm in no rush that's for sure. I lost only 1 lb due to the fact that my body soaked in some water since I was slightly dehydrated. It was certainly yet another experience I'll never forget as you can imagine. :)

What's next? Not really sure. The running has been put on hold for a solid week now. I'm going to test my legs outside after Pilates today & I see a pomegranite martini in my near future tonight. ha! I'm checking into what I can do to help with the clean up. Check out Hands on Nashville or News Channel 5.

Wishing much luck to David & Michele in Birmingham tomorrow!

Unplugged!

Recently, like in the last 3 weeks, I've noticed that my internet doesn't even want to connect to the provider at night. When I wake up in the morning, it's connected. So, I've scheduled an appt for the lines to be looked at tomorrow while I'm at work. Seriously, I work 20 mins away from home and Charter is only open while I'm at work. So, I'm going in LATE today to deal with charter. I cannot wait until they have some competition in this area. Just makes me want to go back to dial up!! I did switch out my modem so I've eliminated that as a possible problem. This one is smaller, which is nice.

It gets better...I logged into my M-Tek, Inc account to email everybody & their granny that would be looking for me at my desk this morning just to tell them I was coming in late. Noticed that an email was forwarded to my boss to pass along to us. It basically said that we are going to implement software to track all internet usage so if you are logging into your web based email or internet sites during the day, don't do it. My boss seemed to shrug it off a little by his tone. He said that it's not as harsh as it sounds. As long as we are not logging into anything that could compromise our security, we are ok. (I'm confused, since when did anyone really want to compromise our security & how would they do it anyway?) Well, shoot! I love logging into my charter, nashville striders website, & this blog during lunch (or the few breaks that I do take).

Number 1 (internet is shaky at home)
Number 2 (internet is basically limited at work)

Why doesn't someone just cut my legs off next?!

My solution...Mar 1st, I'm due another cell phone. (Yes, I hate Verizon, also, along with charter! They have no competition here!) Thinking of getting a phone where I can check my email on it. Anyone have one of those? If so, which one & what do you recommend?

I did my usual cross training last night, watched a lot of news on the destruction. I'm simply speechless & to think I slept through it not knowing how serious it truly was for some people. My heart & prayers go out to them. News channel 5 was saying that they are taking donations. I need to check into that when I'm not cut off from the World Wide Web.

I did stay up last night to watch Eli on Letterman. That was so funny! I've been watching David Letterman on & off since I was in middle/high school. That man is NEVER NOT funny! Eli got a standing ovation from the audience.

Ok, thanks for allowing me to "vent". There are bigger issues going on in TN other than my irritation with Charter, my injuries, & work. God bless those that are without their homes & those that lost loved ones.

Lisa's Blog of Injuries

Ordered this "Pain Free" book today from amazon. I keep reading on the strider's board that it's a good book to read if you are plagued with injuries.

After doing research, I suspect that I finally have IT band issues. The pain seems to match & the description on how you get it seems to match what I've been doing since mid-Dec. HILLS!
The left knee ached the last 6 miles of RC & it's been achy on & off since then but nothing that seemed to get my attention. The sinus crap seemed to make me ignore it, I guess... Last weeks speed on the treadmill seems to have inflamed it. It was cold enough on Sat that I didn't notice it at the start of the Preds 5k, plus getting sick kept me occupied.

Says to ice, take iBuphrophen, & avoid impact for 7-10 days. Well, I'm already 4 days into "no running" so who knows... I do know the elliptical last night seemed to make it "burn". '08 so far has been a sucky year for my health.

Got in some big time cross training after I voted yesterday. I'd like to think that my vote mattered since my choice won our state. :)

Super Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, & Super Bowl MVP on Letterman Wednesday

Super Tuesday:

I've got to figure out where exactly I have to "rock" my vote after work.

Fat Tuesday:

I'm feeling fat enough that's for sure. Heading to the gym immediately after I vote.

I'm going to cross train this week until the cows come home. Deciding that I should test out my internal system & legs on Sat. Still thinking about Cedars of Lebanon...(stop it, Lisa!)

MVP Wednesday:

Our "aw shucks" MVP will be on David Letterman. I will stay up for it.

If I could get a cheap flight out tonight & the day off tomorrow, I'd go sit in on that show. Thanks for the heads up Eddie & the invite. One day, one day....I'll meet you & I hope it's when I come up for the NYC marathon. :)

Regards,
Mercedes Marathon Staff

Tonight I worked late so all I did was 1 hr 5 mins elliptical & some free weights on my arms.

My decision:
Do I feel bummed about bowing out of Mercedes? Yeah, I do, but sometimes common sense has to creep into my life. I feel fine, honestly, but Sat really scared the bejeebies out of me. The thoughts of what could happen in Birmingham with almost nobody to identify the body scared me. There is always a first for everything. I'm just not used to NOT following through with something that I've been planning. I've thrown myself a curve ball. Or rather my body has finally stood up for itself & demanded I be nice to it. I know one thing, the speed work on the treadmill sure did a number on my achy left knee. It's not been quite right since the middle of last week. Just another reason I know I made the right decision. (Then why am I looking at when my next race should be.....?! Why do I keep staring at the Strider's race calendar? Why am I still planning? I may not be the fastest I probably could be but gesh, I sure have the addiction!)

The unthinkable

Since the last Giants win 2 wks ago, I've made myself believe in an upset, the unthinkable...
(David & Goliath-David's defense rocked Goliath's cage)

Eli & his underdogs against the Perfect Brady Bunch. All day long, 3 out of 4 picked the Pats to win & in some cases by 2 touchdowns. I knew it would be a close game & the few that picked the Giants said (31-28). I knew that score was too high.
Plaxico B. backed up his prediction & then in the end was the emotional, choked up Giant.
And, what's not to like about Michael Strahan? So, happy for him!

After screaming & not really breathing much from the middle of the 2nd qtr until the end, I called Eddie B. in NYC. They were dancing in the streets. :)

I should be calm by morning. Yes, it's just as bad as last year... :P

The new adventures of "old" Lisa

Michelle H., Cousin Pam, & Me before Preds 5k
Hannah & Lisa @ Preds game

Jeff & Hannah @ Preds game

Cousin Pam's husband, Tim & son, Liam. How cute are they?

Gnash!

Fangtastic Fiasco:

It was a gorgeous day for a race in downtown Nashville, about 40 degrees @ 10am & sunny. I was in shorts, long sleeve tech shirt, short sleeve tech shirt, & gloves. I was overdressed. I should NOT have worn the short sleeve & gloves, but oh well... I felt good, seriously. I got caught up in the excitement of this family oriented Predators Fangtastic 5k. It's probably one of the hilliest 5ks around. It takes off from the Summet Center goes up near the river over to Gay St. Those of you that ran the '04 1/2 CMM marathon will remember going up James Robertson around mile 11. (that hill was taken out in '05) That gradual long uphill made me more than a minute OVER my sub 2 hr goal that year. I hate James Robertson Parkway but I've run it so many times so it's not like I didn't know about it. Ironically, my 5k PR is on this course from 2 yrs ago. (24:40) If I had done a flat 5k that winter, I know I could have gone under 24 mins. Today, I was 28:22!! Believe it or not, I was 4th in my age range. I was so close to finally winning an age grade award on yet another miserable race time (award is a Preds puck). Wouldn't that have been a hoot!?

How I felt:

At mile .5, I realized I should have left one of my shirts in the car. At about mile 1.10, the 1st spit of the race, mile 1.7 was 2nd spit, & then about mile 2.5 the 3rd & final spit. This time I was not so graceful & discreet. Phelgm stuck to my leg & ran down it until about mile 2.8. (NOT PRETTY!) I wanted to puke. I wanted to walk J. R. Pkway. I wanted to stop running but I would rather die than walk during a 5k & I know that's my pride kicking in but that's how bad I felt.

The others:

Jeff, Hannah's fiance' was having a ball running his 1st 5k in his Red Wings jersey. He kept coming up next to me shedding clothes & smoked me in the end. He did a 27:07. Not bad for a 1st timer on such a hilly course. If he had been dressed "appropriately" he would have easily shaved over a minute off, I'm sure of it. Hannah sure did well not to have run much at all. She did a 32:35. Cousin, Pam, did 44:45 on her 1st 5k. I'm so proud of her. Michelle H. did 32:57, which is GREAT considering she had a C-section 12 weeks ago! Michelle, you Rocked it, honey. What's priceless is that I've never heard anyone say, "I need to go pump (my breasts)" immediately after a 5k race. That was a first!!! ha!

I'm officially a drop out:

After much discussion with friends, relatives, & running buddies (with years of experience), I made the decision today to bow out of Mercedes. I'm weak. I'm so weak that the thoughts of walking during a 5k scared the absolute hell out of me. It's not that I mind walking a good bit of a marathon. It's the fact that I'm weak, tired, & pretty fed up with how I feel. I've decided to use my head for once. I'm making an appointment for a complete physical. I have 2 other races to worry about now, Tom King 1/2 & CMM 1/2. I have to get my energy back by the time those races roll around. By backing out, I believe I'll speed up the healing process of whatever is plaguing my sinuses, draining into my stomach, & making me NOT enjoy my running. I have no hip issues right now like I did in the Fall. My left knee is sore but it's always sore. It's time to heal internally. Something I'm not used to doing. My spirit is shot & Lisa needs to get her groove back. :)

Stalking:

The legendary, Wayne Gretsky is the coach of the Phoenix hockey team. We were thrilled to see him at the game but I could have cared less about a photo op with him. Then we spotted Jeff Fisher! People were taking photos! So, in our usual fashion, Hannah & I take off to find him to get a pic while there was an intermission. Apparently, during our sprint downstairs, he went into hiding. We casually walked past security, like we've done so many times at LP Field, & he was gone! We waited, listened in on conversations, etc...still no sight of him...until we went back up to our seats. Drat!!! Oh well, there's always the charity softball game. :) During the '03 Titan's season, I discovered Coach Fisher's pre home game ritual. He runs before each home game. I used to time it just right to be at the ramp when he finished up. People usually have enough sense to leave him alone while he's running but man, what great legs he has believe it or not. For a man his age, he's pretty darn good looking when he doesn't have that "old man" gray beard thing going on. :)

Proposed Cross training:

Pole dancing. As I was taking off my layers at Hannah's, she noted that my ABs are fabulous.
Yeah, they look pretty darn good if I say so myself. (it's the pilates) So, I'm going to get a 2nd job pole dancing on the weekends until my body heals. (KIDDING!!!)

I see a lot of elliptical, bike, weights, pilates, & walking/jogging in my near future. Not saying I'm not going to run at all. Just saying that the next 2 wks I'm going to take it easy. If I feel like staying in bed all day curled up in a comforter, I will do it, for a change. :) In the back of my feeble mind, I'm remembering the Cedars of Lebanon 1/2 marathon & I really wish I would forget that thought.

Super Bowl:

I have to type it again on here. Go Giants!!

Dreadmilling it

Just pretend that this is Eli's #10, same last name, same blood line... :P

Last night, as I got home to change, the bottom dropped out & there's nothing worse than cold winter rain. If it's raining like this in Birmingham, I'll definitely switch to the 1/2 and wear a trash bag over my clothes. It's just not worth it to me to get soaking, cold, wet. I LOVE the rain in the summer months but luckily never had to race in it.

I ended up on the dreadmill running about 2.5 nonstop at a fairly decent pace then I slowed to a walk, then speed, recovery, speed, recovery... I was drenched. It still amazes me at the horror on people's faces when they see how much you sweat in public. :P I made my left knee sore so tonight, is definitely a rest night. I also jumped on the elliptical for 35 mins to stretch out my legs, did yoga ball crunches, & stretched. I felt good for a change. I bought a band for my left knee but after putting it on & examining it, I don't like it at all. My legs swell when I do marathons so I could see me having to sit down on the side of the road in Birmingham to take it off. I'll just wing it. I fully expect my left knee to aggrivate me like it did the last 6 miles of RC, but oh well, you trudge on & finish. The more I read & talk to people, the more I'm finding out that I'm in a lull with my training/racing. Everyone hits these at some point & it's my turn. 2007 was not all bad for me & I'm sure '08 won't be all bad either. If I get into NYC, I know it won't be all bad! FYI, (The application for the ING New York City Marathon 2008 will be available on February 25.)

I got my Nashville Strider's calendar yesterday. I was excited. It motivates me to have it hanging by my desk. Well, along with it was the Funrunner & low & behold the results for the members who did RC. Good Grief, I have been a member for about 4 yrs & they've never put my results in until now. I don't recall my PR in there in '06! I'm slightly embarrassed. :(

As I sit here typing this in my #18 Peyton Manning jersey (I'm pretending it's Eli's), I'm debating on where I want to watch the Super Bowl. I've had a number of invites everywhere. I think I'll pick the loudest crowd. Go Giants!!!!!
