5 that felt good for once....

5 miles at a 9:20 pace this morning....I could definitely feel that it was in the mid-upper 60's versus the 70's.
I even had enough energy to push the pace down in the 2nd & 3rd miles for some "speed".  LOL!
I saw 7:58 pop up during my little "speed workout".  All I could think about was the full mile I ran at 7:36 during a 10k race in '06.  Gesh, I was some speed back.....sigh...

It is what it is right now.....some yoga for me tonight & some packing.

Happy 4th!

Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Good bye June, bring on the 4th of July!

Monday: ab ripper, 30 mins of jillian michael's yoga, & worked with my hand weights
Tuesday: early morning run rained out so I did jillian's yoga (different workout from night before) AM & ran a slow, hot 5 miles with Joe after work. (9:50 pace)
Wednesday: 3.7 miles AM at a 9:48 pace (sore legs) & ab ripper after work
(Joe did 8 this am & is out doing 5 more with the Nolensville runners. We "heart" them but I can't bring myself to run in the afternoon right now if I don't have to...)
Tomorrow: going out for at least 4.3 miles or more...to round out the week & yoga after work.
I'll have a big whopping 24 miles for the week. I promise I'm going to increase the mileage over the next month!

Friday after work, we're Chicago bound...Wrigley, Navy Pier, Taste of Chicago, etc...here we come!

The Church Lady made me do it....

As I stood on the deck at approximately 6:09am this morning watching the black cloud roll in with light rain, I heard Dana Carvey's church lady voice in my head. "Well, isn't that special? You're going to run anyway!" So I did 11 miles in the rain. Most of the time it was light rain, there were those few miles where it was getting pretty heavy. By mile 5, I was soaked. There was one other woman out running so I didn't feel like the village idiot all by myself. No thunder, no lightening...I run. It's summer afterall. It was 70 degrees per the news when I took off. The plan was just to get the miles done & if I walked a lot of the hills so be it. It is what it is....9:56 pace overall & I'll take it all things considering.

Mile 1: 10:50 (I always start off with a hill as the warm up per the start of the NYC marathon)
Mile 2: 10:14 (starting to warm up but staying relaxed & remembering I have no body glide on...ugh!)
Mile 3: 9:45  (feeling ok...hills!)
Mile 4:  9:33 (some downhill & it's pouring now)
Mile 5:  9:35 (wondering if I'll get through it with no blisters or chaffing & I do!)
Mile 6:  9:33 (feeling ok & hitting some flat areas)
Mile 7:  10:06 (drinking my enduralyte water & gatorade)
Mile 8:  10:14 (more hills)
Mile 9:  9:05 (some flats)
Mile 10:  9:50 (just finish)
Mile 11: 10:19 (finish up hill, of course)

Jessica & I did some serious shopping but didn't break the bank by no means this weekend. We hit up the Lebanon Outlet mall, which is really my favorite place to shop other than Murfreesboro. We saw Cars 2 in 3D (with a lot of other people from work) courtesy of the CEO where I work. (He rocks!)
We then hit up Cheesecake Factory for salads. She got a delicious banana cheesecake. I got one bite. LOL!
Then of course we hit up the Greenhills mall. I wore her out. Is it possible I have more energy than a 13 yr old?
Joe & Joey had a wonderful time at Kings Island. As I type this they're probably a little over an hour and a half away.  They drove up friday, went to the park all day long yesterday, & are driving back today.  As Joey put it, it was in his "top 10 best days".  LOL!

The 4th can't get here fast enough....

I know I sound like I'm wishing my life away but I need a 3 day weekend.  The week was different, fun, challenging, & if I had to do it all the time, I'd have to find something else to do. ha!  No really, it was a nice change of pace from the office. Met some wonderful folks, put some names with faces, etc... It was pretty funny hearing folks yack it up about Little Richard being in the lobby, seeing Carrie Underwood checking in, & Tracy Morgan in the elevator. Guess the Hilton is a happening place. I do know that I'm grateful to have been on the opposite side of the hotel from the Bridgestone. I heard that the Bridgestone side was REAL noisy last Tuesday night because of the Back Street Boys & New Kids on the Block concert. Who would have thought!

Last Sunday: Father's day was busy. We did Father's day stuff & I packed for my 5 days up the road. Literally, I was up the road at the downtown Hilton next to Bridgestone for work all week. Long days but where there's a will there's a way....I did get in a grand total of 10 miles last week. Ha! (and 30 mins on an elliptical)

Monday: 30 mins elliptical (sleep deprived)
Tuesday: 4 miles (slow 9:48 pace) over the pedistrian bridge & around LP Field. Love watching the sun come up over the stadium. :-)
Wednesday: Ran 3 slow miles (10:43 pace) with Joe in the afternoon. Stressful day so I ended it with a shark attack drink at Joe's Crab Shack, too. ha!
Thursday: Rest
Friday: 3 mile run (9:19 pace - threw in some speed the 2nd mile) to watch the sun come up over my favorite field.
Saturday: ab ripper, Jillian Michael's yoga, & my free weights (my body was craving that yoga!)
Tomorrow: I have every intention on doing 11 miles....because next weekend a long run just won't happen in Chicago.

The good, the bad, & ugly of it.

Moon Pie 10 miler race:
I expected a PW & that's what I got. Heck, I was slower than last week's training run on it. LOL! That's what happens when the humidity is slightly up, the temp is up about 5 degrees over last week, & you go out too fast the first 2 miles. I won't post splits mainly because I'm pressed for time today but my overall pace was 9:40 on that damn, hot, hilly 10 mile course. Last Sat it was 9:34 & I felt good at the end of it last week. Yesterday, notsomuch!  1:37 is a poor time for me on that course but eh well....my PR is something like 1:28:59 back in '06 which is almost exactly one minute faster than what Carla got yesterday. She got a 1:29:58. She's the Queen of hot/humid running! I cannot tell you how many times I've run with that girl when it was 50 degrees, I'm nearly naked & she's totally covered almost head to toe. LOL!  My only explanation is that in 06, I ran my fastest half, fastest full, fastest 5k, & I was training a lot with Michelle H. in Winchester. She's always faster than me & got me faster that year but I have to believe that 06's weather had to be slightly better. Gesh!  Plus too, I'm still building the base. I had a solid base going on in the summer of 06.  Eh well, if you're like me you run against yourself & it stinks when you don't have a decent day.  Like I said, I expected a PW but not slower than my most recent training run on the course.  :(   It was nice to see Kim C., Carla, Chris, Tom L. & Kellye.  Miss you guys!
The next 2-3 days will be crazy & my work outs will be short & random due to work stuff. This is definitely a huge cut back week for me on everything other than work. LOL!

Jeff Fisher charity softball game: the last one....
Fisher's done a lot for the Nashville community. The charities that benefit from this event every year will truly miss this event. We had 3rd row seats behind Fisher's dugout. Great view! I posted pics on FB. It's always fun to watch NFL players act goofy trying to play a sport that they aren't good at for sure. Kerry Collins is probably the best softball player on the team. He knows right where to put the ball. Ken Amato got two home runs, though, last night. We had fun but left before the fireworks show at Greer stadium. (They truly need a new Sounds stadium. It really is run down in my opinion.)  Fisher flew in some Army folks from the Wounded Warrior program. The ones he climbed Mount Kilimanjoro with recently.  They played in the game. So cool!  The big surprise for me was Derrick Mason there. D Mace has always been my "old school" Titan Fav. I have his jersey which he signed years ago on the ramp behind LP. He's still FAST as hell.

We also tried out the new sports bar in our 'hood. The Other Place was ok. It won't be a place where we go all the time but just ok.  Joe liked his Italian Po boy but I didn't like my 1/2 nachos so much. We should've stuck to our urge for mexican I guess...

Since we found out we do not have kids during the 4th, we're flying the coop. Road trip to Chicago for us. Some exploring one day & a Cubs game the next. Neither one of us has ever been to Wrigley field.

Happy Father's day!

Rain....finally!

It's just not right for the grass to look so nasty this early in the summer time...but the rain we got sorta perked it up a bit. It "stormed" out our run with the Nolensville run club Wednesday evening. So, all I did on Wednesday was ab ripper in the morning. I was tired anyway.

Thursday, I made up the 4 miles from Wed at a slow 9:41 pace before work & did 30 min yoga Jillian Michael's after work.  Tomorrow, I'm getting up for ab ripper and that's it.  I've got rest up for my PW on the moon pie course. ha!

Seriously looking forward to friday!

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

just get me over the hump...

Monday:  Jillian Michael's yoga 30 mins & ab ripper P90X 16 mins
45 min workout was enough for me on Monday. Ugh!
Tuesday: 5.5 miles at a slow 9:43 pace AM & Jillian Michael's yoga 30 mins PM
(felt like it took 2 miles just to wake up Tues morning)
Wednesday: ab ripper P90X AM & plan to run 4 mi with the Nolensville Run club
(they seem like a great bunch of folks)

We don't have kids during the 4th so we're heading to Chicago for a Cubs game & some deep dish pizza.  Probably a little bit of exploring & then back here...quick trip.
Joe & Joey are heading to Kings Island (if nothing else changes) next Fri. (24th)
Jess & I are opting out since we found out the water park isn't as good at "Holiday World".
I'll need the down time after next week at the conference anyway.

This coming weekend....MP 10 miler Sat morning, Jeff Fisher charity softball game Sat night, breakfast with kids on Fathers day, & me packing.

I'm about ready for June to end.  :-)

Missing Phase II....but...

I can't wait to hit up "Fabulous Finds" in the 'boro. I LOVE shopping in the 'boro any day over Cool Springs!  Wish we could live in the 'boro!!!

"recovery run"

It's been forever since I've run the day after my "longish" run.
3.5 miles at a 9:55 pace this morning.
I just couldn't put it off till the evening. :(  I got out about 8:00am.
The legs were sore, of course, but they loosened up.
The 2nd mile was mostly flat. Like I've said, there's nothing flat as a pancake about this 'hood.
Lots of stretching going on today.
Tomorrow will definitely be some ab ripper & Jillian Michael's yoga going on.

Ahh, the torture...that is the Moon Pie 10 mile course....

I'm not even going to go into all the reasons why my body hates the heat. It's redundant at this point but here goes with the 2nd run thru in the buckle. I have a hair appt at 1:30pm today so I was heading that way anyway (the 'homa). Why not get up at the butt crack of dawn & go run 10 miles alone in the countryside?  I got started at about 7:05am. That's usually when the actual race starts anyway...never on time from my experience. My overall pace was 9:35 which is better than 3 weeks ago when it was about 55-60 degrees versus the 65-70 this morning. I didn't look at the weather & didn't care if it rained on me. It would have been welcomed to be perfectly honest.  I took 2 enduralytes before I started. I carried one bottle of enduralyte water & one with enduralyte water & some gatorade mixed in it. Note to self: only take one bottle in the belt & take an extra set of enduralytes when I trudge up that damn hill at mile 4:25.  I just don't think I want to carry both bottles in the race when there will be plenty of water stops. So, yes, I'm wearing my new fuel belt with just the one bottle & plenty of enduralytes in the race.

Mile 1: 9:35 (rollers but had some shade)
Mile 2: 9:23 (rollers almost no shade :( )
Mile 3: 10:00 (rolling hills, intermittent shade)
Mile 4: 9:27 (start of damn hill)
Mile 5: 10:42 (finished damn hill)
Mile 6: 8:59 (relief!)
Mile 7: 8:59 (different pace but didn't that happen the last time?)
Mile 8: 9:43 (wanting it overwith!)
Mile 9: 9:17 (achy, breaky hip action)
Mile 10: 9:34 (thank God this is done)

So, the overall time was 1:35:38 (not the worst training run I've done on that rolling, hot course but not the best).  Here's to a new personal worst on the RC Cola Moon Pie course next weekend. I doubt I come anywhere near my current PW, which is something like 1:31 but oh well...it is what it is & the ultimate goal is NOT this race this year.  (Marathon #9 in the big Apple early Nov) Btw, we secured out travel from the NYC library to Staten Island this week. All we need to do is train at this point.  All logistics are worked out.
Yesterday: ab ripper P90X & lots of stretching.
Got the new foam roller & will be using that thing a lot in the future.
Sunday: Ummm....maybe ab ripper again & tons of more stretching.
If the legs can handle it, I may do a short, SLOW 3 miles late in the evening so I don't have to get up Monday for it. More heat acclimation...

Hot & no real relief in sight.....

Yesterday: ab ripper P90X & worked with my 5 lb weights AM & we met up with the Nolensville run club at Martin's at 6:15 for some hot miles PM. The first 2 miles were somewhat hilly. I went out too fast & had some stomach issues. I even stopped at a portapottie on a construction site. Ugh! I finished off 4:16 miles at a 10:05 pace. I'll take that given the fact that we stopped at the water spot & at the pottie. I even thanked the organizer for arranged for the pottie. :-P  Oh, I'm guessing it was definitely still above 90 degrees when we started. Do I really want to do that again anytime soon?  We'll see...

Today: I slept in a little but did Jillian Michael's yoga & rolled the IT Band after work.

I fully expect a personal worst in this heat at the Moon Pie 10 miler. If I'm anywhere close to 88-90 minutes it will totally surprise me.  I'll have a conference that I have to head to late Sunday evening through that friday after MP. So, my running will be short & sporadic week after MP. I'm guessing I'll ask for a 4:30am wake up call & head across the pedestrian bridge to run around LP Field a few times for at least 3 miles. Will miss Jillian & Tony that week. LOL!

TGI-almost friday!

the learning curve...

I don't care what NEW thing you're trying to do, there's always a learning curve & I hate it. I'm all about learning new things, don't get me wrong but I'll be so glad when I have a few months under my belt to where I actually know what the heck I'm doing most of the time. That's my new job rant for the day.
Yes, I still like it. Yes, the people are wonderful. They're having a Sounds family night for the company in July. (Going to be weird not seeing the neighbor pitch that night but he's in Milwaukee making the big bucks right now.)  Really what more can I ask for but time & patience ON MY PART. I am my own worst enemy with patience.

I did yoga last night, ran 3.6 this morning (it was supposed to be 3 but I went out too far), & did yoga this afternoon.  I'm totally enjoying seeing actual runnrs out in the mornings here. This 'hood is a runner, jogger, Niki G's fitness haven. LOL!  The fitness club meets around 5:15am. Sometimes I see them doing hill repeats carrying a weight in one hand. This morning they were running flat carrying one weight. Seems like that would pull on the one arm too much & be so annoying. Anyway, it's nice seeing people in the morning rather than almost nobody at all. I actually see a guy running barefoot with his dogs every now and then.

Tomorrow morning, I'm sleeping in a bit & doing ab ripper P90X. It's only 16 mins long. We're going to join the little Nolensville Run club up the road at 6:15pm at Martin's BBQ for a social run. Yep, it will be hotter than hell but oh well....I need to meet some others with some goals that are local here. I'd love to meet a speedy gal to run with in the village. It would be nice to be able to meet someone around the corner to run with on occasion especially when it's dark. I am in heaven with it light outside at 5am right now.

I'm finally going to start another book. I've felt VERY lost lately not reading during my lunch time. Janet Evanovich's latest Plum novel will be out soon. I cannot wait. I've had mine preordered for months on amazon.  Joe ordered me Rob Lowe's book, "Stories I only tell my friends".  I think it will be very interesting. I've always liked him & he's lived a pretty wild life. He also ordered me Tina Fey's new book, "Bossy Pants". (wonder if he's trying to tell me something!)  Saw her on Ellen (we tape the show nearly every day now) & just had to have it.

It's Tuesday....happy PRE Hump day. ;-P

Humidity must be down this am?!

I actually ran 6 miles with hills at a 9:37 pace...(by my standards of like 5 yrs ago that's slow but right now I'll take it!)  I climbed the major hills with no walk breaks this morning for a change. :-)

Oh yeah...forgot to mention that yes, I'm also doing the Murfreesboro half in Oct. So, ONLY 2 races between now & the New York City marathon. That's it. That's all I have time for & I'm sticking to it.

Have a fab Monday!

Busy June & it gets busier...

Today: I did ab ripper & worked with my hand weights a while
(We laid low today, organized more stuff, hung 4th of July decorations, & picture frames.)

Tomorrow morning, I'm targeting 5 - 6 miles before I head to a conference downtown.
Right now my run schedule is very random but my goal right now is to just get my legs used to the mileage all over again. Been a while since I have run 30 miles in one week & this week, I did it. (only because I moved my long run to Sat versus Sun)

This week, I'll probably only hit 23-24 miles, not real sure yet. July 24th will be the first marathon training run for the striders. We have the kids that weekend but will try to make it. Who knows... So, my NYC marathon training has unofficially started. I've never trained a lot in hot weather like this...in the past I wouldn't start marathon training until Sept...Rocket City (always a disaster!) & the idiotic attempt at Chickamauga with shin splints in 06. I'm going to put those disasterous Fall marathon attempts behind me & think good thoughts, though. I have no idea what my body will do come Nov 6th but it won't be from lack of trying. I'm not running any races this summer other than Moon Pie & most likely will avoid the early fall races just so I'm focused on the ONE goal. As most people know who run marathons, NYC is hilly. We live in a neighborhood that's hilly so I'm going to take that as a blessing. I do not have to drive to Percy Warner to get hills but who knows...we might do one run over there for a change of scenery. My main thing right now is to get the nutrition down. I've got to figure out how to carry shot blocks along with the hammer gel enduralyte pills. The sweaty hair is driving me crazy, too. May need to look into wearing some sort of headband this summer. The IT Band is still acting up off & on. I'm making myself roll it. I even ordered a BETTER foam roller today off amazon since I needed another set of super feet inserts. No shipping & $10 cheaper than the actual website. :-)

Mary Belle's wedding was nice & she was gorgeous last night. She's off to St. Lucia for her honeymoon. They're two peas in a pod & couldn't be more perfect for each other...pics on Facebook.  Those two even had a photo booth at the reception. Lots of fun, especially after I had 2 raspberry martinis. :-P

Our next door neighbor got called up to the Brewers about a month ago & he got his first major league baseball win today. Go Tim & Go Brewers!!!  So happy for them.

TQ's two kids won the soapbox derby in the 'homa in two different divisions! He's on cloud nine right now. They're heading to Akron for the nationals. It was his daughter's first attempt at the derby!!  (I hated I wasn't there to watch it this year.)

So, now back to my busy month....a week long conference the week after the Moon Pie race. I'm not seeing much running going on that week. The weekend after the conference, we're heading to "Kings Island" near Cincinnati on the 25th. No running the weekend after Moon Pie. Guess my legs will get a rest that week.

The 4th of July....well, we'll be here but the plans are in the works to hang with Heusers, hit the fireworks downtown, & I hope to get in a good run that weekend.

I swear it will be here before I know it!  I cannot wait!

The hills are alive with the sounds of me whining....

Yeah, I had the Sound of Music in my head while running hills this morning.
On a positive note, I got out 15 mins earlier than last week, the skies remained overcast until I hit the 6 mile mark, & I took an endurolyte pill before I started. I made sure I filled my bottles up all the way with enduralyte water from Whole Foods (Love that stuff!). I needed every drop for the 9 miles I did this morning. 9:56 pace but I had a lot of walking in there in order to get the bottles out, drink, & put them back in...hate, hate, hate wearing fuel belts but oh well.....  There's no way to do an absolutely FLAT run in this 'hood, seriously. On the short flats I did hit, I was noticing 8:10-8:15's, though.
God help me June 18th on that Moon Pie course. Please give us overcast skies at least. It was probably about 70 degrees when I took off & I was soaked head to toe when I finished in sweat. I even had it in my ears. Felt like I had been swimming!
I think I'll wear the loose thin belt I bought to wear in NY with enduralytes in it for the 10 mile trek in the Buckle. Not sure I want to lug around my own water at this point.

Our 'hood association sent a letter to the neighbors about the dog barking. We'll see how that goes...
I really feel bad for the dog. He looks lonely over there. I feel like breaking him out & taking him for a walk. As of last night he was still howling at 9pm. It always seems to be worse right when it gets dark. I don't know what the hell is going on over there because everytime security knocks nobody comes to the door. In the meantime I still have a yearning for my own "foxxie" dog (fox terrier). I think I'll wait till the stressfullness of the this new job dies down to get one, though. It will have to be at home alone from 7:00am until about 5:15pm every day. There are some days I do walk though the door closer to 5, though.  My boss has allowed me to choose my schedule. :)

I didn't want to get out of bed for ab ripper yesterday so yesterday was a total rest day.
Today: 9 miles 9:56 pace with hills

Mile 1: 9:59
Mile 2: 9:20
Mile 3: 10:06 (wrestling with fuel belt)
Mile 4: 10: 26 (ugh, HILLS)
Mile 5: 9:11
Mile 6: 10:17 (HILLS & fueling)
Mile 7: 9:57 (more hills)
Mile 8: 10:30 (that one hurt my pride)
Mile 9: 9:35

Not sure what I'll do tomorrow but it will entail sleeping in a bit. My whole body & brain are just tired.
Shooting for 5 or 6 miles Monday morning before work.

Totally looking forward to Mary Belle's wedding this afternoon & evening!
Get to spend some time with April too!

Short week, thank goodness...

Yesterday: Jillian Michael's ab dvd 30 mins AM
AB ripper P90X PM

Today: 5 miles at a 9:34 pace (the hills are killing me in this neighborhood)
Planning on Jillian's yoga after work

Longish run this weekend will depend on how I feel during the run.
Hoping for 8-10 miles since Moon Pie is coming up.
I expect to get a PW at that race but eh well....

Funniest thing I've heard in a while was said to me before lunch yesterday.
"Want to go get a pedi with us?  We're going to a place that serves us wine in glasses & not cups."
Joe asked what planet I was working on now. ha!

Learning something new every day & I like that.
