Dara Torres being 41, Tomescu-Dita being 38...just made me smile. Sure, among all the text messages...mainly from Carla & June, we were really shocked when Deana K. dropped out but then when Romania's Dita took off, she looked so determined & strong. We were also a bit shocked at Paula Radcliffe holding on, not dropping out, & running on a fractured femur. What was she thinking? If I heard correctly both Paula & Deana will be near or at 38 yrs of age in 4 years. If they want it bad enough & can stay healthy, they can do it just like the 38 year old winner. Amazing! I cannot wait to see the men run next Sat night!
As for Dara, my personal opinion is that if she had not had that 50m freestyle race just before the relay, they would have won. She literally went from the podium back into the water in a matter of minutes. Natalie Coughlin sure has had a great Olympics, too.
I find it interesting that most international athletes in ALL sports train here in the U.S. :)
I had never been a big swimming fan until I watched Phelps in '04 in Athens & then earlier this year, I read just how fast he had become & then I heard about Dara, etc... History was made again in the Olympics. I'm now a swimming fan for sure. How cool was it that after the Raven's preseason game was over, the fans stayed at the stadium & watched Phelps make history?! Due to the fear that people would NOT come to the game or would leave early, they decided they had better show MP's big finish on the jumbotron. That's almost funny. :P "Ravens for Phelps" is what their signs said...guess Baltimore will be putting on a parade soon.
Next week just won't be the same without the "Water Cube".
I'm a total beach bum today. We went to Woods Reservoir to lay around in the sand. I'm almost ashamed to admit it but I think I slept almost 10 hrs. My body finally shut down after midnight last night.
